French champions Monaco face basketball exile after federation rejects appeal

Monaco, the reigning French basketball champions, have been excluded from next season’s domestic competitions after the French Basketball Federation rejected their appeal over a financial crisis.

The federation’s appeals chamber denied Monaco’s request to remain in the French top flight. The ruling also prevents the club from competing in any of the LNB’s divisions, including the second tier.

Monaco’s only remaining route to avoid exclusion is to make a final appeal to the French National Olympic and Sports Committee. The club is still considering whether to take that step as it assesses the consequences of its financial difficulties.

The latest decision follows an initial appeal lodged by Monaco on 20 July. The appeals chamber then gave the club until 31 July to submit the required documents, but Monaco failed to meet the deadline. That failure led to the original exclusion decision being upheld.

The ruling places the future of one of French basketball’s leading clubs in serious doubt, despite Monaco having won the domestic championship. The team has also been affected in European competition, dropping out of the EuroLeague and returning to the EuroCup, the continent’s second-tier tournament.

Financial problems threaten Monaco’s future

Monaco, owned by Russian businessman Alexey Fedorychev, received several financial penalties during the previous season after failing to pay players and staff. The club was also handed a transfer ban.

The severity of the situation prompted the Principality of Monaco to intervene directly in the running of the team in an effort to prevent its complete collapse.

The crisis reached its most serious point when several of Monaco’s leading players, including Mike James, stayed away from the club for the past two and a half months in protest at unpaid wages.

James subsequently moved to Dubai Basketball but returned for the fifth and final game of the French league finals. Monaco won that game to secure the title against Paris Saint-Germain.

Other prominent players to leave the club include Alpha Diallo and Elie Okobo, further weakening a squad that had just been crowned French champion.

The appeals chamber’s decision means Monaco cannot defend its domestic title unless its final possible appeal succeeds. The club must now decide whether to take the case to the French National Olympic and Sports Committee, with its future in the national league structure dependent on the outcome.
