Former Egypt coach Shawky Gharib has agreed to join Sudanese giants Al-Merreikh as their new head coach.
The experienced tactician is replacing Serbian Milutin Sredojevic “Micho following his departure from the club.
Al-Merreikh opted to appoint Shawky for the coaching job on Tuesday due to his track record. Shawky is expected to travel to Mauritania in the comings hours to seal his move to the Sudanese outfit.
The 66-year-old tactician last stint was with Egyptian club Ghazl El Mahalla, departing the club in February 2025. He managed several clubs including Smouha FC, Ismaily, Entag El Harby and El Mokawloon.
Shawky has managed the Egyptian national team on three occasions, leading the Pharaohs in 2004, 2013 and in 2021.
The Sudanese powerhouse is ranked sixth in the Mauritanian Premier League with 36 points after 25 matches.
It’s worth noting that Al-Hilal and Al-Merreikh are competing in the Mauritanian Premier League due to the current suspension of football activity in Sudan as a result of political unrest.
