Folarin Balogun urged to make Premier League return as Chelsea and Spurs circle
Former United States international goalkeeper Kasey Keller believes Folarin Balogun’s future could lie back in the Premier League, insisting a return to London would be a natural fit for the USA forward.
Balogun enjoyed a standout FIFA World Cup campaign with the United States, emerging as their leading goalscorer and strengthening his reputation on the international stage after years of development away from English football.
The 24-year-old was one of the biggest talking points of the tournament after his red card against Bosnia-Herzegovina appeared set to rule him out of the USA’s last-16 clash with Belgium. However, his suspension was overturned in a controversial episode that followed discussions between US President Donald Trump and FIFA president Gianni Infantino.
Despite the off-field drama, Balogun’s performances have continued to attract attention, with Premier League giants Chelsea and Tottenham Hotspur reportedly monitoring his situation.
Keller, speaking exclusively to Ozoon during the World Cup, believes a move back to England — and particularly London — would make sense for the former Arsenal academy graduate.
Keller warns Balogun must earn his place at elite clubs
“Would a move to Chelsea or Tottenham be good for Folarin Balogun? Look the Premier League right now can pay you more than anywhere else. You have a very limited time in your career. Let’s be honest, Balogun is an Arsenal guy. He is a London kid. So an opportunity to move back to the capital, if that is right for him, it’s right for him,” Keller said.
The former USMNT captain, however, stressed that returning to the Premier League would come with pressure, especially at clubs competing for major honours.
“But you have to prove yourself, in those clubs you have to still get the job done or they’ll find someone else,” he added.
Keller drew from his own career experiences abroad, explaining that success is not only measured by playing for the biggest clubs but also finding an environment where a player can thrive.
“I enjoyed the challenge of going to a new club, and winning over team-mates and fans, and being the first American to play in the top flight in Spain and captaining a side in Bundesliga,” he said.
Balogun’s form puts him in demand
Balogun left Arsenal permanently in 2023 and has rebuilt his career in France, where he scored 19 goals across all competitions for Monaco last season.
His impressive club form, combined with his World Cup performances, has placed him among the most sought-after attacking options heading into the summer transfer window.
While a return to the Premier League could offer financial rewards and the chance to play in his home city, Keller believes Balogun’s priority should be finding a club where he remains valued and continues to develop.
“I wouldn’t say anything different if he said, I was at Arsenal, but I’m at a new club now where I’m scoring goals, in a beautiful part of the world, I’m appreciated, I’m wanted. A little extra money, is that more important than being in a good situation in my career?” he said.
