Fit-again Morocco star Nayef Aguerd resume group training at Marseille
Morocco international Nayef Aguerd has returned to full group training with Olympique de Marseille, providing a major boost for the French club ahead of their preparations for the new season.
As confirmed by the French Ligue 1 giants, the experienced central defender has resumed training at the Robert Louis-Dreyfus Training Centre after completing his recovery from a thigh injury that kept him sidelined for several months.
Aguerd suffered the injury during the latter stages of the 2025/26 campaign, with his last competitive appearance coming in Marseille’s French Cup quarter-final clash against Toulouse on March 4. The setback forced him out of action at a crucial stage of the season and also ruled him out of Morocco’s squad for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
The defender’s return will come as welcome news to Marseille head coach Roberto De Zerbi, who will be hoping to have one of his key defensive figures available as the club begins preparations for the upcoming campaign.
Despite his return to fitness, uncertainty continues to surround Aguerd’s long-term future at the Stade Vélodrome. The Moroccan remains under contract with Marseille until June 30, 2030, but reports have suggested that his situation could attract attention from clubs looking to strengthen their defensive options.
The 30-year-old enjoyed a solid first season with Marseille after arriving as an important defensive addition, making 22 appearances across all competitions during the 2025/26 season. During that period, he picked up five yellow cards while establishing himself as a reliable presence at the back.
Aguerd’s experience at both club and international level has made him a valuable asset. The Moroccan defender has previously featured in top European leagues and has been a key figure for the Atlas Lions, playing an important role in the country’s rise on the global stage.
With his market value currently estimated at around €15 million, Marseille could face decisions regarding whether to keep the centre-back as part of their plans or consider potential offers should interest arrive.
For now, Aguerd’s focus will be on regaining full match fitness and helping Marseille during their pre-season preparations as the club aims to compete strongly on domestic and European fronts.
