Ferran Torres says Barcelona must make first move over new deal

Ferran Torres has made it clear that Barcelona must demonstrate their desire to keep him before talks over a contract extension can begin, with the forward saying the club’s level of interest will influence his decision about the next stage of his career.

The 26-year-old Spain international discussed his future while Barcelona were on tour in the United States, speaking to American sports media outlet Sportico. Torres remains under contract with the Catalan club and said he was relaxed about the situation, because his current agreement gives him time to consider his options.

“Barcelona must prove that they want me. They can come to negotiate and, in the end, everything will be discussed,” Torres said.

His comments place the responsibility on Barcelona to initiate meaningful discussions if they want to secure his longer-term commitment. Torres did not suggest that a decision was imminent, instead emphasising that he could wait before determining what comes next.

The forward was also asked about reports linking him with interest from major European clubs, including Paris Saint-Germain. Rather than expressing concern about those reports, Torres said that being wanted by leading sides could only benefit him.

“Every time these teams want you, it is a good thing,” he said.

Despite the speculation, Torres stressed that Barcelona remains his priority. His position is strengthened by the fact that he already has a contract with the club, allowing him to approach the situation without having to make an immediate choice about his future.

“I have a contract with Barcelona. It is true that in football you never know what can happen, but the good part is that, since I have a contract, I can wait and make the decision myself,” Torres said.

The forward’s comments came during Barcelona’s United States tour, where the subject of his future was raised alongside reports of interest from elsewhere in Europe. While he acknowledged that football can change unexpectedly, he indicated that his existing agreement gives him security and control over the timing of any decision.

For now, Torres’s message is that Barcelona’s approach will be central to the renewal process. The club will need to show that they want to retain him before negotiations can develop, while the player can continue to assess the situation under the protection of his current contract.
