Farid Boulaya set for first Algerian league campaign with USM Alger

Farid Boulaya will play in the Algerian league for the first time after agreeing to join USM Alger on a two-year contract.

The 33-year-old former Algeria international has spent most of his career in France and has made more than 200 appearances there, while also gaining experience abroad. He has now chosen the reigning CAF Confederation Cup holders as he looks to revive his career.

Boulaya was born in Vitrolles, in the Marseille region, and developed the majority of his football career in France. He represented Clermont, Bastia and, most notably, Metz, building a career of more than 200 matches in the French game before moving overseas.

His next destination was Serbia, where he played for IMT Belgrade after spending the first part of the season without a club. The attacking midfielder became a free agent again this summer and has opted to take a step that is new for him by joining the Algerian top flight.

The move followed competition for his signature. CR Belouizdad had also expressed an interest in Boulaya as the club looked for a creative player capable of beating opponents, breaking defensive lines and providing the final pass.

Boulaya is understood to have taken time to consider his options before deciding on USM Alger. The club’s sporting project ultimately persuaded him, with the prospect of joining the holders of the CAF Confederation Cup proving decisive.

His move brings an experienced player back to the country he represents internationally. Boulaya won eight caps for Algeria and scored once for the national side, having been part of the generation selected during Djamel Belmadi’s time as manager. He also took part in the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations.

The transfer reflects a wider shift in Algerian football, with a growing number of players of Algerian origin who were born or developed in Europe becoming more willing to continue their careers in Algeria.

That decision is not always straightforward. Some members of the diaspora have hesitated before making the move, but the appeal of the Algerian league has continued to grow.

For USM Alger, Boulaya offers a player with considerable experience, technical quality and the ability to influence matches in the final third. His creativity and capacity to eliminate defenders could provide an important addition to the club’s attacking options over the next two seasons.

The agreement also gives Boulaya the opportunity to experience domestic football in Algeria for the first time, more than a decade after beginning his senior career in France. With his move to USM Alger now confirmed, he will look to make an impact in the country represented by the national team for which he earned his eight international appearances.
