Egyptian winger Mahmoud Trezeguet close to Al Ahly exit amid strong Saudi interest
Egyptian winger Mahmoud Hassan Trezeguet is reportedly edging closer to a departure from Al Ahly after the club received an official offer from Saudi Arabian side Al Riyadh during the current transfer window.
The experienced forward, who returned to Egyptian football with huge expectations, has emerged as one of the major talking points surrounding Al Ahly’s summer plans following growing reports over the club’s wage structure and transfer policy.
Al Ahly had previously maintained that no official offers had arrived for any member of the first-team squad. However, developments over the past 24 hours appear to have changed the situation, with the Cairo giants now seriously considering a proposal for Trezeguet from the Saudi Pro League.
Reports indicate that Al Riyadh submitted an offer worth around one million dollars for the player, while Al Ahly are attempting to negotiate a higher fee closer to 1.5 million dollars before approving any potential transfer.
The negotiations are believed to be progressing positively, with flexibility shown by both clubs as discussions continue over the final details of the deal.
Trezeguet joined Al Ahly on a long-term contract extending over five years, but after completing only one season of that agreement, the possibility of an early exit has now become increasingly realistic.
The former Aston Villa winger is understood to have one of the highest salaries in the squad following his arrival from Al Rayyan, a situation that reportedly contributed to internal discussions about balancing the club’s wage structure ahead of the new season.
Despite widespread rumours, there are no indications that the player created problems or rejected the club’s position regarding salary-related matters. Instead, reports suggest that Trezeguet has shown understanding toward the club’s financial considerations and remains open to any solution that would benefit both himself and Al Ahly.
The Egyptian international is believed to have informed the club that he would not stand in the way of a move if the management considered his departure beneficial from both a sporting and financial perspective.
Al Ahly’s management are reportedly evaluating the offer carefully, especially given the financial return the deal could generate for the club at a time when balancing salaries within the squad has become an important issue.

Beyond the transfer fee itself, the proposed Saudi move would reportedly see Trezeguet earn more than double his current salary at Al Ahly, making the offer financially attractive for the player as well.
The Saudi club involved in the negotiations, Al Riyadh, are not considered among the financially dominant clubs in Saudi Arabia such as Al Hilal, Al Nassr, Al Ittihad, or Al Ahli, all of whom benefit heavily from Public Investment Fund backing. Nevertheless, Al Riyadh remain ambitious and are looking to strengthen their squad with experienced international players ahead of the new campaign.
Trezeguet’s possible exit would mark a significant moment for Al Ahly, especially considering the positive impact he made during the past season. The winger was widely regarded as one of the team’s standout performers, impressing supporters with his work rate, attacking contributions, and consistency throughout the campaign.
Despite criticism directed at some members of the squad after Al Ahly’s recent season yielded only the Super Cup title, Trezeguet remained one of the few players consistently praised by fans for his performances and commitment on the pitch.
The player’s strong connection with Al Ahly supporters has also made the situation emotionally difficult for many fans, particularly given his long-standing affection for the club and his decision to previously reject larger financial opportunities abroad in order to return to Egypt.
Before joining Al Ahly, Trezeguet earned significantly higher wages during his spell with Al Rayyan in Qatar, yet still chose to return to his homeland and represent the African giants once again.
However, with negotiations advancing and all parties appearing open to a deal, Trezeguet now seems increasingly close to ending his current chapter with Al Ahly as he prepares for a potential new challenge in Saudi Arabia.
