Egyptian League: National Bank of Egypt take early control against Zamalek

National Bank of Egypt had 67% possession compared with Zamalek’s 33% after the opening exchanges of their Egyptian League, Week 2 fixture, although neither side created a clear-cut chance in the early stages.

The match began with National Bank of Egypt attempting to impose themselves high up the pitch and keep Zamalek pinned inside their own half. Their pressure allowed them to see more of the ball, but much of the play remained concentrated around the halfway line, with no immediate danger developing in either penalty area.

Yaw Annor provided one of the first attacking moments when he collected the ball outside the area and struck a powerful effort towards goal. However, his shot travelled just wide of the left-hand post.

Zamalek responded by trying to work their way out from the back. Their players exchanged a series of short passes in the defensive area as they looked to retain possession, move beyond the National Bank of Egypt press and build attacks from deep.

National Bank of Egypt continued to apply pressure and looked to regain the ball quickly whenever Zamalek attempted to advance. Their high press was designed to restrict Zamalek’s options in the defensive half and force errors before the visitors could progress into midfield.

Another opportunity arrived when Mostafa Shalaby tested the Zamalek defence from inside the penalty area. The National Bank of Egypt player connected with a strong shot, but a defensive intervention took the sting out of the effort and it passed without posing a serious threat to goal.

Ahmed Yasser Rayan then won a free-kick for National Bank of Egypt in the middle of the pitch after Omar Gaber brought him down during a promising attack. The decision offered the side another chance to maintain their territorial advantage, although the incident did not lead to a recorded effort on goal.

Zamalek were also awarded a free-kick in midfield after Ahmed Fattouh was penalised for his challenge on Yaw Annor. That stoppage briefly halted National Bank of Egypt’s momentum as Zamalek sought to regain control of the contest.

With 67% possession, National Bank of Egypt had enjoyed the greater share of the ball, but the opening phase remained short on clear chances. Yaw Annor’s effort narrowly wide and Mostafa Shalaby’s blocked shot were the main attempts recorded, while Zamalek’s short passing from the back and sporadic fouls in midfield reflected their attempts to withstand the pressure.

The match was still in its opening first-half stages, with National Bank of Egypt holding the initiative but unable to turn their possession into a decisive breakthrough.
