Barcelona were forced into an early change against Real Madrid after Xavi Espart left the pitch in the 29th minute of the first half because of physical discomfort.
Manager Hansi Flick replaced the young full-back with Alejandro Balde after Espart became unable to continue. Espart had started the match and made a positive impression before first showing signs of pain and restricted movement following an early challenge involving Aurelien Tchouameni.
Although he attempted to play through the problem and continue helping his side, his condition worsened when he sprinted to track Yan Diomande. Espart fell to the ground and was unable to carry on, prompting Barcelona’s coaching staff to make the substitution to avoid aggravating the issue.
Flick acted quickly, bringing on Balde and reshaping the defensive positions. Balde took over at left-back, while Joao Cancelo moved across to the right flank.
Espart’s departure represents a setback for Barcelona after the young player had been given the opportunity to start and had used his time on the pitch effectively.
The club will now await the results of medical examinations to establish the precise nature of the injury and assess how long Espart might be unavailable.
