Egypt continue unmatched dominance in African club football after Pyramids FC’s history CAF Champions League triumph
Egypt continued its status as a football powerhouse in Africa on Sunday, June 1, when Pyramids FC clinched the 2024/25 CAF Champions League trophy.
Pyramids FC defeated South Africa’s Mamelodi Sundowns 2-1 in the second leg of the final, securing a 3-2 aggregate to lift the trophy for the first time in the club’s history.
The victory means four countries from Egypt have now been crowned continental champions in the various competitions.
Pyramids FC have joined Al Ahly, Zamalek, and Ismaily SC as the clubs from Egypt with continental trophies.
Al Ahly alone has won 25 continental trophies, including 12 CAF Champions League titles and eight CAF Super Cup trophies.
The honours make Al Ahly the club with the most continental trophies.
Zamalek follows Al Ahly with 13 continental honours, having won five CAF Champions League titles, 5 CAF Super Cup trophies, one African Cup Winners Cup, and two CAF Confederation Cup trophies.
Pyramids FC and Ismaily SC both have one CAF Champions League each.
The successes of these clubs confirm the dominance of Egyptian clubs when it comes to continental competitions and add credence to the North African country’s status as a powerhouse in African football.
