Édouard Mendy named Best Senegalese Player abroad for the second time

Senegal goalkeeper Édouard Mendy has been voted the best Senegalese player abroad for 2024, earning the honour for the second time after previously receiving it in 2021.

The award, presented by the Senegalese National Sports Association, recognises his outstanding performances for both club and country.

Since his move to Al Ahli Saudi in 2023, Mendy has firmly re-established himself among the top African goalkeepers, delivering consistent displays that have been instrumental in his team’s early-season success.

His commanding presence between the posts and ability to produce crucial saves have made him a key figure for the Saudi club and the Senegal national team alike.

Mendy’s excellent start to the campaign was highlighted by his heroics in the Saudi Super Cup final against Al Nassr, where he played a decisive role in securing victory for Al Ahli and was named the best goalkeeper of the match.

The triumph added another trophy to his growing collection, underlining his continued influence since leaving Chelsea for the Saudi Pro League.

The 32-year-old’s performances have also carried over into continental competition.

In the AFC Champions League Elite, Mendy helped Al Ahli remain unbeaten after four matches, guiding them to second place in Group B.

His standout display against Al Sadd on Matchday 4 — where he produced a string of superb saves — once again showcased his reliability and leadership at the back.

In the Saudi Pro League, Al Ahli currently sit fifth in the table with 13 points, maintaining an unbeaten run of three wins and four draws from seven games.

Much of that stability has been credited to Mendy’s experience and consistency in goal.

His calmness under pressure and sharp reflexes have given the club a solid foundation during what has been a promising start to the season.

However, Al Ahli will soon have to cope without their number one.

With the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations approaching in December, Mendy is expected to join Senegal’s squad for the continental tournament in Morocco — a significant absence for coach Matthias Jaissle’s side as they pursue the Saudi Pro League title.

For Senegal, though, his current form is an encouraging sign ahead of their title defence.

For Al Ahli, his absence will be deeply felt — a reflection of just how vital Édouard Mendy has become, both at home and abroad.
