Durban City appoint former Kaizer Chiefs trainer Khalil Ben Youssef as new coach
South African Durban City have officially unveiled Tunisian tactician Khalil Ben Youssef as their new head coach ahead of the 2026/27 Premiership season.
The 37-year-old joins the KwaZulu-Natal-based club after his recent departure from Kaizer Chiefs, where he served as co-coach alongside Cedric Kaze. His appointment marks a new chapter for Durban City as they continue to strengthen their technical structure following a period of transition.
Ben Youssef had been strongly linked with the role in recent weeks, particularly after it became clear that the club would not be retaining former head coach Pitso Dladla on a permanent basis following his departure announcement.
In an official statement, Durban City welcomed their new manager and outlined the ambition behind the appointment.
“Durban City FC is pleased to announce the appointment of Khalil Ben Youssef as the Club’s new Head Coach ahead of the 2026/27 season,” the statement read.
“The 37-year-old Tunisian tactician joins Durban City FC as the Club embarks on an exciting new chapter following a historic period of growth and success.”
Ben Youssef arrives with a CAF A Licence and a wealth of coaching experience gained across multiple footballing regions, including Tunisia, Morocco, Tanzania, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates. His international exposure is expected to bring tactical depth and versatility to Durban City’s project.
Over the course of his career, he has held senior technical roles at prominent clubs such as AS FAR Rabat, Young Africans SC, Club Africain, and Al Ahli SC, building a reputation for disciplined organisation and modern tactical approaches.
His most recent experience at Kaizer Chiefs provided him with further insight into the demands of South African football, particularly the intensity and competitiveness of the Betway Premiership.
Durban City’s leadership believes Ben Youssef’s appointment aligns with the club’s long-term vision as they prepare for a demanding 2026/27 campaign that will include domestic league action, cup competitions, and participation in the CAF Confederation Cup.
“The Club’s commitment to long-term stability and continued football excellence is reinforced with this appointment,” the statement added.
With expectations now rising, Ben Youssef will be tasked with building a competitive squad capable of delivering consistent performances on both local and continental fronts.
