DR Congo international Theo Bongonda has ended his three-year spell in Russia, parting ways with giants Spartak Moscow.

The 29-year-old winger leaves the Russian side following a prolonged period of uncertainty, as his contract was set to expire on 30 June and he had already been out of regular competitive action for several months.

His exit had been widely anticipated, but it is now official as both parties move on after a challenging final phase of his time in Moscow.

Theo Bongonda brought an end to his stint with FC Spartak Moscow after what was initially a productive and important role in the squad, before gradually falling out of the matchday picture in his final months.

Bongonda’s absence from recent fixtures had already signalled that his future lay away from the Russian capital, with the winger spending much of the latter part of his contract sidelined from competitive involvement. Despite this, his overall contribution across three seasons remains notable.

During his time at Spartak, Bongonda made 75 appearances in all competitions, scoring 16 goals and registering six assists. His output reflected his attacking influence during key spells, where he often provided width, pace, and direct threat from the flanks.

However, as the squad evolved and tactical priorities shifted, his role diminished, eventually leading to a mutual understanding that a separation would be the best outcome for both player and club.

For Spartak Moscow, the departure marks another change in an ongoing squad reshaping process, while for Bongonda it opens the door to a new chapter in his career. The Congolese winger now becomes a free agent, able to negotiate with clubs ahead of the upcoming season.

At this stage, no clear indications have emerged regarding his next destination, with the player yet to publicly reveal whether he intends to remain in Europe or explore opportunities elsewhere. Given his experience across multiple leagues, he is expected to attract interest from clubs seeking a proven wide attacker with top-flight pedigree.

As the summer transfer window approaches, Bongonda’s situation is likely to become one to watch, with several teams potentially viewing him as an experienced option capable of adding immediate quality in the final third.

For now, the former Spartak winger closes the chapter on his Russian adventure, leaving behind a mixed but meaningful spell in Moscow as he prepares for the next step in his professional journey.
