Didier Gomes Da Rosa emerges as leading candidate for Sierra Leone national team job

Sierra Leone’s search for a new national team head coach is gathering pace, with French tactician Didier Gomes Da Rosa now identified as one of the leading contenders for the role.

The experienced manager, known for his extensive footprint across African football, is being closely considered as the West African nation weighs up a potential new direction for its senior men’s team.

Gomes Da Rosa brings with him a reputation built over more than a decade of coaching across the continent, where he has lifted over 10 trophies in countries including Tanzania, Rwanda, Cameroon, Guinea, Sudan and Jordan.

His career has also included deep runs in continental and regional competitions, including semi-final appearances in both the CAF Confederation Cup and the Arab Champions League.

More recently, the French coach made headlines after guiding Botswana to qualification for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations — ending a 15-year absence for the national side and further strengthening his credentials as a manager capable of delivering under pressure on the international stage.

Across his coaching journey, Gomes Da Rosa has developed a reputation for adaptability and success in challenging environments, having worked with clubs and national teams in more than a dozen countries.

His résumé includes stints in North, West, East and Southern Africa, as well as the Middle East, where he has consistently been tasked with rebuilding teams and delivering immediate results.

For Sierra Leone, the potential appointment would signal a clear ambition to reset and build a more competitive national side.

The country has struggled for consistency in recent international campaigns, and the arrival of a coach with deep regional knowledge and proven tournament experience could mark the beginning of a new strategic phase.

While no official decision has been confirmed, sources indicate that discussions remain active as the Sierra Leone Football Association evaluates its options ahead of the next competitive cycle.

If appointed, Gomes Da Rosa would inherit a project centred on stability, qualification ambitions, and restoring competitiveness on the continental stage — a familiar challenge for a coach whose career has often been defined by rebuilding and results under pressure.
