France boss Deschamps predicts bright future for Morocco after quarter-final victory
France head coach Didier Deschamps believes Morocco’s rise among world football’s elite is far from over after ending the Atlas Lions’ 2026 FIFA World Cup campaign with a 2-0 quarter-final victory.
Speaking after France booked a third successive World Cup semi-final, Deschamps praised Morocco’s progress over recent years, describing the Atlas Lions as a talented young side capable of achieving even greater success in the future.
Deschamps salutes Morocco’s progress
Although France controlled much of the contest, Deschamps admitted Morocco’s tactical approach initially caught him by surprise.
“I was a little surprised by Morocco’s starting lineup,” Deschamps said. “But I tried to understand what they wanted to do, drawing our defenders out without a traditional striker and using pace on the wings.”
He said France’s discipline in possession prevented Morocco from creating sustained attacking pressure.
“Once we had the ball and stayed disciplined, it didn’t allow them to be dangerous.”
Despite eliminating Africa’s last remaining representatives, the France coach was quick to acknowledge the quality within the Moroccan squad.
“I have a lot of respect for this Morocco team.”
‘Morocco will have a bright future’
Deschamps pointed to Morocco’s consistent performances at recent World Cups as evidence that the North African nation has established itself among the game’s leading teams.
“They reached the World Cup semi-finals in Qatar, and now they’ve reached the World Cup quarter-finals again.”
“That tells you they have very good players.”
He also highlighted the age profile of Morocco’s squad, suggesting their best years may still lie ahead.
“It’s a young team. Many of their players have only 10 or 15 international caps, apart from Achraf Hakimi, who has more than 100.”
“That makes me believe Morocco will have a future with a smile.”
