Dembele to Al Hilal talk cools as financial reality and PSG stance bite

Saudi Pro League champions Al Hilal are increasingly unlikely to pursue a move for Ousmane Dembele, with the Paris Saint-Germain forward’s potential transfer from Ligue 1 to Riyadh hitting major financial and sporting obstacles before formal negotiations have even begun.

Reports in France and Saudi Arabia had linked the France international with what was billed as a potentially record-breaking summer move to Al Hilal – one that could rank as the most expensive transfer in the club’s history. But while the idea has captured attention, those close to the situation suggest it is far more dream than realistic deal at this stage.

Price tag and salary would make it a landmark deal

Any attempt by Al Hilal to test PSG’s resolve would require far more than just convincing the player to join the Saudi Pro League.

Estimates indicate that Dembele’s transfer fee would not fall below €100m and could easily rise beyond that figure. The 27-year-old is regarded as one of PSG’s key assets, and his long-term contract gives the French champions a strong hand in any negotiations, allowing them to demand a premium.

On top of the transfer fee, Al Hilal would be required to assemble a salary package commensurate with Dembele’s status – a huge annual wage and substantial bonuses that, when combined with the fee, would place the operation among the costliest deals ever seen in Saudi football.

PSG and Luis Enrique unwilling to lose key attacking pillar

The financial scale of the move is only part of the challenge. The more decisive obstacle appears to be PSG’s sporting position and the view of head coach Luis Enrique.

The Spanish manager considers Dembele a central pillar of his project in Paris. Since Enrique’s arrival, the winger has become an increasingly influential figure in PSG’s attacking structure – not only in terms of scoring and creating chances, but also through his work in the high press and his role in the team’s overall tactical balance.

As a result, there is no indication that PSG are prepared to part with one of their standout players, particularly at a time when the Enrique-led project has begun to show signs of sporting success. That reluctance significantly reduces the likelihood of a deal being agreed, regardless of how high any offer from Saudi Arabia might climb.

A different Al Hilal to two years ago

Observers point out that Al Hilal of two seasons ago might have been more inclined to shatter transfer records for a marquee name of Dembele’s profile. Today, however, the landscape inside the club has shifted.

The current hierarchy has adopted a more cautious approach to spending in the transfer market. The board is working to reduce overall outgoings, with a number of large existing contracts within the squad requiring restructuring or settlement. Alongside this, there is a clear objective to establish a more sustainable financial balance over the coming years.

Al Hilal have also refined their recruitment strategy, increasingly targeting younger players with the potential to remain at the club for several seasons, rather than committing huge resources to one or two exceptional, budget-heavy signings that could limit flexibility elsewhere.

Dream signing at odds with current priorities

From a footballing perspective, there is little doubt inside the Saudi club that a player of Dembele’s calibre would offer a significant upgrade. His pace, dribbling and creativity would add another dimension to an already star-studded attack and could help form one of the most formidable forward lines anywhere in the game.

Yet when weighed against the projected cost, PSG’s firm position and Al Hilal’s evolving financial and sporting priorities, the probability of the France international appearing in the Roshn Saudi League appears very slim at present.

For now, Dembele’s name is likely to remain prominent in headlines and speculation around Al Hilal’s transfer plans. Turning that interest into a formal, advanced negotiation – let alone a completed deal – would require a series of exceptional changes in circumstances that, for the moment, are not in sight.
