Olivier Dall’Oglio explains Augustine Boakye’s impressive rise at Saint-Etienne

Former AS Saint-Etienne coach Olivier Dall’Oglio believes Augustine Boakye’s impressive performances this season are the result of patience, growing maturity and a tactical adjustment that has allowed the Ghanaian to showcase his qualities.

The 25-year-old has enjoyed an outstanding start to the 2026/27 campaign, registering five goals and three assists in Ligue 2. His contributions have established him as one of Saint-Étienne’s most influential attacking players under head coach Ian Cathro.

Dall’Oglio, who coached Boakye between July and December 2024, is not surprised by the midfielder’s development. Speaking to Le Progrès, the former Saint-Étienne manager explained that the player needed time to adapt to French football and become more confident.

“It doesn’t surprise me to see him emerging now. Some players take longer to develop. He has matured,” Dall’Oglio said.

The French coach also highlighted Boakye’s work ethic and personality, describing him as a dedicated professional who was initially quiet around the club.

“A hard worker and a pleasant guy to have around every day. You rarely heard him speak,” he added.

According to Dall’Oglio, Boakye’s successful integration and growing confidence have played important roles in his transformation. The Ghana international has become more comfortable expressing himself on the pitch, with his recent performances demonstrating greater composure and precision in front of goal.

Dall’Oglio also believes Boakye’s repositioning into midfield has helped him become a more influential player. The tactical adjustment allows the Ghanaian to use his technical ability, endurance and willingness to contribute defensively.

“His repositioning in midfield is interesting, especially because he has technical quality and endurance,” the former coach explained.

Boakye’s development has been particularly evident in his spectacular goals, including his recent effort against Rodez, when he lifted the ball over a defender before finishing clinically.

With his confidence continuing to grow, the Ghanaian will hope to maintain his outstanding form and help Saint-Étienne push for promotion. His performances have also strengthened his standing as an emerging contributor to Ghana’s national team.

For Dall’Oglio, Boakye’s rise is a reminder that patience and the right tactical environment can make a significant difference in a player’s development.
