David Zulu backs Langelihle Phili to fire Kaizer Chiefs to league title

Former Kaizer Chiefs striker David Zulu believes new signing Langelihle Phili can make a decisive contribution as the Soweto club target the league title this season.

Kaizer Chiefs began their campaign strongly, moving to the top of the log after beating Kruger United at Mbombela Stadium last weekend. Phili is expected to make his debut when Amakhosi face Golden Arrows in the MTN8 at FNB Stadium on Sunday.

Zulu, who previously played for Chiefs, says the club’s early form provides a strong foundation for a successful season. He has also backed the team to improve on their second-place finish from last season.

“The league is tough, but Chiefs have begun with purpose. As long as they maintain their worst result as a draw, they’re on the right track. This is how top clubs like Chiefs should approach matches,” Zulu tells KickOff.

The former striker believes Chiefs must focus on collecting points consistently, regardless of the margin of victory. In his view, avoiding defeat will be crucial if the club are to sustain their position at the top of the standings.

“Winning by 1-0 or any other scoreline matters less than ensuring they leave no game without at least a point. Last season, they finished second, and they can only improve from that.

“This season, they are destined for the league title.

“I’m happy with the signing of Phili. He will boost our fire power upfront. In previous seasons, we lacked creativity and [the] final touch, but with him, we are poised to win the league this season,” he adds.

Phili joined Chiefs from Stellenbosch FC and will have the opportunity to make his first appearance for the club in a significant cup fixture against Golden Arrows. His arrival is expected to strengthen the attacking options available to the Soweto giants.

Zulu was encouraged by what he saw from Chiefs in their opening match against Kruger United and believes their impressive start can be maintained throughout the campaign.

“Chiefs’ strong start is sustainable. I was impressed with their performance against Kruger United.

“There’s a trophy heading to Naturena this season.”

Chiefs’ opening victory has placed them at the summit of the log, while Sunday’s MTN8 meeting with Golden Arrows at FNB Stadium will provide Phili with the chance to begin his Chiefs career.

Zulu’s confidence reflects the expectations surrounding the club after last season’s second-place finish. He believes the combination of a positive start and the addition of Phili can help Chiefs go one step further and secure the league title.
