Dani Ceballos has a route to a new club after Spain’s transfer deadline

Dani Ceballos will remain eligible to join a club after Spain’s domestic transfer window closes, because a FIFA regulation allows certain free agents to be registered outside the normal transfer period.

Spanish newspaper Mundo Deportivo has identified a provision in FIFA’s regulations that could give the former Real Madrid midfielder more time to decide his next move. Ceballos has been linked with clubs across La Liga, but his future remains unresolved as the deadline approaches.

Spanish clubs in the top two divisions have only five days remaining before the deadline to register players. That deadline is set for 23:59 on Tuesday, yet Ceballos will not be bound by it because of the circumstances surrounding his departure from Real Madrid.

The 29-year-old reached an amicable agreement with Real Madrid on 26 June to terminate the final year of his contract. His deal had originally been due to run until 30 June 2027.

That agreement meant Ceballos entered the summer transfer market, which opened on 1 July, as a free agent rather than as a player still contracted to a club. It is this status that gives him a special exemption under FIFA’s regulations governing registration periods.

The FIFA Regulations on the Status and Transfer of Players state: “A professional player whose contract has expired normally or has been terminated by mutual agreement before the end of the registration period applicable to the contracting club may be registered outside these registration periods.”

As a result, any club in Spain or abroad can sign and register Ceballos after the domestic transfer window closes at midnight on Tuesday. The rule therefore leaves open the possibility of a return to his boyhood club, Real Betis.

Ceballos came through Real Betis’ academy before leaving for Real Madrid, and the Andalusian club has emerged as a possible destination. However, although FIFA’s rules provide him with additional time to complete a domestic move, there is a separate deadline for European competition.

UEFA has set 23:59 on Wednesday, 2 September as the final time for clubs to register players for its three competitions: the UEFA Champions League, the UEFA Europa League and the UEFA Conference League.

That deadline could prove decisive if Ceballos joins Real Betis. The Andalusian side are due to discover their UEFA Europa League opponents next Thursday, meaning the club would need to complete the transfer and register the player in Europe several hours before the UEFA deadline if he is to feature in the competition.

If the move is not completed in time for European registration, Ceballos would have to wait until the winter registration period before he could play continental football for Real Betis.

His future, therefore, may not be settled when Spain’s domestic market closes, but the UEFA cut-off will provide a much tighter deadline for any potential return to the club where his professional career began.
