Cody Gakpo attracts Manchester City interest as Liverpool weigh summer approach

Manchester City have contacted Cody Gakpo’s representatives to discuss a possible move for the Liverpool forward during the current summer transfer window.

According to British outlet Liverpool Echo, Manchester City have opened talks with the Netherlands international’s representatives about the possibility of signing him from Liverpool before the window closes. No agreement has been reported, but the approach indicates that the Premier League champions are exploring a move for the 27-year-old.

Tottenham Hotspur are also interested in Gakpo and are considering whether to make a move for the forward before the end of the summer transfer period. The interest from both clubs comes only 12 months after Gakpo agreed a new five-year contract with Liverpool.

Gakpo made an immediate impact at the start of the new Premier League season, scoring Liverpool’s opening goal against Newcastle United on Sunday. His goal came in the side’s first league match of the campaign and placed him at the centre of attention as speculation over his future emerged.

He and Alexander Isak were the only forwards to complete the full 90 minutes at St James’ Park. The match was also described as Andoni Iraola’s first official game in charge of the Reds.

Manchester City’s contact with Gakpo’s representatives has therefore added a new dimension to the forward’s situation. The initial discussions concern whether a transfer could be possible, while Tottenham Hotspur’s interest provides another potential destination should Liverpool decide to consider offers.

Gakpo joined Liverpool from PSV Eindhoven and has now spent 12 months playing under the terms of his new long-term agreement. That contract means Liverpool are not under immediate pressure to sell, although the approaches from Manchester City and Tottenham Hotspur have put his position under scrutiny during the final stages of the summer window.

The Dutchman’s latest performance against Newcastle United including his goal and his complete appearance came before the transfer speculation was reported. His involvement in Liverpool’s opening Premier League fixture underlines his importance to the team, while the interest from two Premier League clubs suggests he is viewed as an attractive option for strengthening their attacks.

For now, the reported contact remains at the discussion stage. Manchester City have spoken to the player’s representatives, and Tottenham Hotspur have also expressed an interest, but there has been no indication of a completed transfer. Gakpo remains a Liverpool player after signing his five-year contract only a year ago.
