Chelsea’s Estevao faces uncertain future after another night on the sidelines

Chelsea winger Estevao Willian is considering leaving the club after struggling for regular first-team opportunities under manager Xabi Alonso.

The Brazilian was not used in Wednesday’s Carabao Cup last-16 tie against Liverpool, despite the absence of Joao Pedro and Cole Palmer. Liverpool eventually progressed after winning the match on penalties.

Estevao has attracted strong support from Chelsea fans, many of whom believe the winger has the ability to make a significant impact. They want to see him given the chance to demonstrate that on the pitch rather than remain on the substitutes’ bench, according to the English newspaper The Sun.

The 19-year-old has played only 163 minutes for Chelsea this season, with 125 of those coming in the Carabao Cup. His run of appearances ended at Anfield when Alonso decided not to bring him into the game.

The Sun reported that it could be “only a matter of time” before Estevao starts looking for new opportunities unless his situation at Chelsea improves.

Asked after the Liverpool match about the Brazilian international’s limited playing time, Alonso acknowledged that the player is unlikely to be satisfied with his current role.

“I understand his situation and he could certainly be happier,” Alonso said at his post-match news conference.

The Chelsea manager added: “Every player wants to play and wants to be part of the team. We have had some intense matches, and every player will have their opportunity.

“I am sure Estevao will get his chance. That is my responsibility, and we have to deal with it.”

Estevao’s lack of involvement against Liverpool was particularly notable because Chelsea were without two attacking options. However, Alonso chose not to select the Brazilian during a match that was ultimately decided from the penalty spot.

Chelsea’s next listed Premier League fixture is against Manchester United on 31 October 2026. Liverpool are scheduled to face Arsenal in the same competition on 1 November 2026.
