Bernardo Silva answers Real Madrid doubts with decisive display in Barcelona win

Jose Mourinho’s decision to bring Bernardo Silva to Real Madrid began to look justified as the Portugal midfielder helped secure an unexpected 2-1 victory over Barcelona at Camp Nou.

Silva imposed the tempo that suited Real Madrid and delivered an accomplished performance in his first major test for the club. His display also offered an early answer to the doubts surrounding his limited involvement in matches before the move.

Mourinho had always believed Silva could become an important figure during the season. Rather than immediately placing the midfielder at the centre of his plans, however, the manager allowed him time to regain his physical condition before handing him responsibility in midfield.

The approach was understood by both coach and player. Once Silva reached full fitness, he showed the technical quality and leadership developed during his previous spell with Manchester City, according to Spanish newspaper AS.

Silva’s performance against Barcelona was particularly significant because he had been viewed at Real Madrid’s Valdebebas training complex as the player most capable of restoring discipline and structure to the side. Many had questioned whether he could fulfil that role, but he passed his first serious examination with distinction.

The midfielder knows the win is only an initial step. His professionalism and ambition mean he is expected to continue working and improving over the coming months.

A move driven by ambition

The transfer story began in June, when Mourinho visited the Spanish capital for the first time after terminating his contract with Benfica. During meetings with Jose Angel Sanchez and Juni Calafat, he made his position clear: “We need a player like Bernardo Silva, we must sign him.”

As soon as Silva learned of Real Madrid’s interest, he stopped all other negotiations. That decision created difficulties for his agent, Jorge Mendes, who had already begun looking for a new destination after Silva’s time with Manchester City came to an end.

Silva had made no secret of his desire to play for Real Madrid. After learning he would not remain at Manchester City, he offered himself to the Spanish club, although Real Madrid had initially decided during the first months of 2026 that signing him was not worthwhile.

Mendes then began assessing the available alternatives. Silva, who had already won every possible trophy during his time with the English club, nevertheless remained committed to his preferred destination.

He had previously enjoyed the World Cup as a Real Madrid player and had rejected earlier offers from Atletico de Madrid and Barcelona. His decision to wait for the opportunity to wear the famous white shirt was therefore driven more by personal and professional ambition than financial reward.

Mourinho’s return revived that possibility, convincing Silva he would receive a genuine chance to compete for a place and help restore Real Madrid to winning ways. Despite the risks and anxiety caused by the wait, he did not change course.

Silva now has a season and a half to prove Mourinho’s faith was justified. The victory at Barcelona was his first mark on the team, but he hopes to contribute to a stronger Real Madrid capable of competing for major honours, making the move one of the most important stages of his career.

Barcelona face Deportivo Alaves in La Liga on 31 October 2026. Racing Santander meet Real Madrid in La Liga on 01 November 2026.
