Chelsea seal deal for Argentina’s Valentin Barco after 2026 World Cup – reports

Chelsea have reportedly completed the signing of Argentina international Valentin Barco from Strasbourg, with only an official announcement now said to be pending.

The 21-year-old, who was part of Argentina’s squad at the 2026 World Cup, is set to become the latest player to move from Strasbourg to Stamford Bridge under the shared BlueCo ownership structure.

World Cup ends in disappointment for Barco

The deal comes in the immediate aftermath of the 2026 World Cup, which concluded with Spain defeating Argentina 1-0 in the final to claim their second world title.

Barco, however, played only a minor role in Argentina’s campaign. Despite being called up to the national team, the versatile left-sided player featured just once, appearing for only 19 minutes in the 3-1 group-stage win over Jordan. He spent the rest of the tournament on the bench as an unused substitute.

His limited involvement on the world stage has not diminished interest from Chelsea, who have been closely tracking his development in France.

Standout season in Ligue 1

Barco enjoyed a strong season with Strasbourg in Ligue 1, operating both as a midfielder and a left-back. Across 43 matches in all competitions, he scored three goals and provided nine assists, emerging as one of the club’s most influential performers.

Despite that form, French fans will not see him return to Ligue 1 next season. According to French outlet Foot Mercato, Chelsea have now moved to secure his services permanently, continuing their strategy of recruiting young talent through their multi-club network.

The reported transfer would make Barco the fifth Strasbourg player to head to Chelsea since BlueCo’s takeover, following Mike Tresor (referred to locally as Mike Benders), Aaron Anselmino, David Datro Fofana and forward Emmanuel Emegha, who all joined the London club on loan or permanent deals.

Deal ‘completed’ – Fabrizio Romano

Transfer specialist Fabrizio Romano stated on X (formerly Twitter) that the move to Chelsea is “done”, adding that a formal announcement is expected soon.

Romano explained that all documents for Barco’s move have been signed, following a verbal agreement reached in May. Final details have now been finalised, clearing the way for Chelsea to confirm the transfer.

The Italian reporter said the paperwork ensures Barco will join Chelsea ahead of the new campaign, strengthening the Premier League side’s options on the left flank and in midfield.

Alonso to gain another new signing

With the move all but confirmed, Chelsea head coach Xabi Alonso is expected to have another new recruit at his disposal for the upcoming season.

Barco’s ability to cover multiple positions down the left side is likely to appeal to Alonso, who has been reshaping his squad ahead of his first full campaign in charge. The Argentine’s age and output at Strasbourg also fit Chelsea’s recent emphasis on signing young, high-upside players.

While Barco’s World Cup involvement with Argentina was limited, Chelsea’s hierarchy appear convinced that his performances in domestic football point to significant potential. The club is expected to outline its plans for the player – including whether he will join the first-team squad immediately or be integrated more gradually – once the transfer is officially announced.
