Charlton confirm Nigerian defender Lanre Olatunji exit as academy clear-out continues

Championship outfit Charlton Athletic have confirmed the departure of promising defender Lanre Olatunji as part of their end-of-season academy retained list, bringing an end to the youngster’s development journey in south London.

The club announced on its official website that Olatunji will leave upon the expiration of his contract on June 30, 2026, closing a chapter that began at youth level and never quite reached senior breakthrough.

Listed as a Nigerian on the club’s records, the 2007-born centre-back had been considered one of several academy players pushing for progression in recent seasons.

Olatunji’s pathway at Charlton began when he joined at Under-12 level after impressing during a successful trial. A product of Trinity School, he had previously featured for Croydon District before earning his opportunity with the Addicks.

His steady rise through the ranks culminated in a scholarship deal signed in the summer of 2024, a key milestone that underlined the club’s belief in his defensive potential.

Despite that progression, first-team opportunities proved elusive. Operating primarily as a centre-back, Olatunji was unable to break into the senior squad before the club opted against extending his stay. His exit reflects the competitive nature of academy football, where only a fraction of prospects successfully transition into the professional ranks.

Charlton’s announcement comes at a time of renewed focus on youth development, with the club continuing to streamline its academy structure while preparing emerging talents for higher levels. Attention now shifts to the immediate future, as the club’s Under-18 side gears up for a significant fixture.

The young Addicks are scheduled to face Wigan Athletic in the Professional Development League playoff final on May 15 at The Valley, offering a platform for the next wave of prospects to stake their claim. The venue is also set to host the 2026 Unity Cup, an international tournament featuring Nigeria, Zimbabwe, India and Jamaica.

Charlton’s academy pedigree remains notable, having produced established internationals such as Ademola Lookman, Semi Ajayi and Joe Aribo, highlighting the pathway Olatunji ultimately falls short of completing.
