Emam Ashour on the radar of Celtic

Scottish champions Celtic have reportedly intensified their interest in signing Al Ahly and Egypt midfielder Emam Ashour following his outstanding performances at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

Ashour emerged as one of Egypt’s standout players during the tournament, scoring crucial goals against Belgium and Australia while playing a key role in the Pharaohs’ historic run to the round of 16—the nation’s best-ever World Cup finish.

According to reports, Celtic have identified the 28-year-old as a priority midfield target during the current summer transfer window as they look to strengthen their squad ahead of the new season.

The Scottish giants view Ashour as an ideal fit for the number eight role, while also appreciating his ability to operate as a defensive midfielder. His tactical versatility further enhanced his reputation during the World Cup, where Egypt head coach Hossam Hassan also deployed him on the wings, with the midfielder consistently delivering influential performances.

Celtic are said to have already opened discussions with both Al Ahly and Ashour’s representatives over a potential transfer. The Scottish club reportedly believe a deal could be completed for around £4 million, although Al Ahly are expected to demand a significantly higher fee given the player’s importance to the team.

The Cairo giants remain in a strong negotiating position, with Ashour under contract until 2028. While Al Ahly are reluctant to lose one of their key players, the report suggests a transfer cannot be completely ruled out if the right offer arrives.

However, Celtic could face stiff competition for the Egypt international’s signature. The report indicates that clubs from Saudi Arabia and England are also monitoring Ashour’s situation, with interest from either market likely to make negotiations considerably more difficult for the Scottish champions.

Celtic believe Ashour possesses the experience and quality needed to make an immediate impact in Glasgow. Having previously played in Europe with Danish side Midtjylland before returning to Egypt to join Al Ahly, the midfielder is viewed as a player capable of adapting quickly to the demands of Scottish football and European competition.

Celtic’s recruitment team value Ashour’s maturity and winning mentality, seeing him as a ready-made addition rather than a long-term development project. His performances for both club and country have strengthened the belief that he could play a pivotal role in the club’s ambitions domestically and in European competitions.

Despite the growing speculation, no formal agreement has been reached, and Ashour remains an Al Ahly player. Nevertheless, Celtic’s decision to explore the financial conditions of a potential transfer underlines the serious nature of their interest.

Meanwhile, Ashour is not the only Egyptian attracting attention from the Scottish champions. Real Oviedo winger Haitham Hassan has also been linked with a move to Celtic in recent days, although reports suggest the Spanish club has already rejected an initial approach for the Egypt international.
