Cape Town City have beaten Marumo Gallants to the signing of TUT midfielder Akani Rathokoa, who was named player of the tournament at the Varsity Football Cup.
Rathokoa had been expected to join Marumo Gallants after spending the past fortnight training with the club. However, Cape Town City moved quickly to secure his services following his impressive performances in the competition.
A source close to Cape Town City said Rathokoa agreed terms with the club on Monday and has signed a long-term contract with the Citizens.
“Akani is now in Cape Town. Marumo Gallants delayed signing him, so Cape Town City could not waste time and completed the deal soon after he arrived at the airport,” the source said.
The midfielder emerged as the standout player during the Varsity Football Cup, where his performances earned him the tournament’s individual award.
Marumo Gallants had been working towards completing a deal after Rathokoa joined their training sessions, but Cape Town City’s intervention means the player will now continue his career with the Citizens.
