Cameroon secure AFCON spot as Mozambique dominate Eswatini
Cameroon confirmed their place in next year’s Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) following a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Kenya in Monday’s round of 2025 AFCON qualifiers. The Indomitable Lions showcased their determination and composure to seal their spot in the prestigious tournament, maintaining their unbeaten run and strengthening their lead in Group J.
The lone goal of the match came as Cameroon once again edged out Kenya, replicating their win from Friday’s encounter.
With this victory, Cameroon now sit comfortably at the top of the group with 10 points, making it mathematically impossible for them to miss out on qualification.
The win ensures that the five-time AFCON champions will compete for continental glory in Morocco next year.
Elsewhere in the qualifiers, Zimbabwe secured an important 3-1 win over Namibia at Orlando Stadium.
The Warriors bolstered their own qualification hopes with a strong performance.
Despite a late goal from Namibia in the 90th minute, Zimbabwe’s earlier dominance proved too much for the Brave Warriors to overcome.
Zimbabwe’s triumph keeps them in contention as they push for a place in the AFCON finals.
Meanwhile, Mozambique delivered a commanding performance against Eswatini, cruising to a 3-0 win.
The Mambas dominated possession and applied relentless pressure throughout the match, overwhelming their opponents with clinical efficiency.
Mozambique’s victory sends a clear message to their Group D rivals, Mali and Guinea-Bissau, warning them not to become complacent as the race for qualification heats up.
The three points from this match put Mozambique in a strong position as they continue to vie for a spot in the tournament.
Algeria also maintained their perfect record in Group E with a 1-0 win over Togo at Stade de Kégué.
The Desert Foxes, two-time AFCON champions, extended their unbeaten streak and now sit atop the group with 12 points.
Algeria’s consistency throughout the qualifiers has once again highlighted their status as one of Africa’s top footballing nations as they prepare for yet another AFCON campaign.
In other results from Monday’s matches, Equatorial Guinea came from behind to secure a 2-1 win over Liberia, while Gambia edged past Madagascar with a 1-0 victory.
Both teams will be looking to build on their respective wins as they aim to book their own places in next year’s tournament.
With the qualifiers moving into the final stages, teams across the continent are battling for the remaining spots in AFCON 2025.
Monday’s results have brought clarity for some and pressure for others, as the countdown to the prestigious tournament continues.
