Cameroon goalkeeper determined to reclaim Manchester United first-choice spot after loan spell
Cameroon international, André Onana, is preparing for a return to Manchester United with a clear objective of winning back his first-choice role revive his career at Old Trafford.
The 29-year-old goalkeeper, currently on loan at Trabzonspor, has no plans to seek a permanent move elsewhere once his temporary spell in Turkey ends. Instead, the Cameroonian international is determined to head back to Manchester and compete for a starting berth next season.
Onana is said to be fully aware of the challenge that awaits him. Rising competition, particularly from current first-choice goalkeeper Senny Lammens, means reclaiming the No.1 shirt will be far from straightforward. Nevertheless, sources indicate that Onana remains resolute and is prepared to battle for his position, even if it means facing the possibility of limited playing time.
His loan deal at Trabzonspor runs until the end of the current campaign, after which he will once again report to Manchester United and resume duties with the Red Devils.
Onana originally joined United from Inter Milan in 2023 in a deal worth €50 million. His arrival came with high expectations, given his impressive performances in Italy and in European competitions. Over two seasons at Old Trafford, he featured in 102 matches, conceding 150 goals while keeping 24 clean sheets.
However, last season proved particularly difficult. A series of high-profile errors led to costly goals, drawing heavy scrutiny from fans and pundits alike. The mounting pressure and inconsistent performances ultimately convinced the club’s hierarchy to sanction a loan move, allowing the goalkeeper an opportunity to regain confidence and form away from the spotlight of the Premier League.
Now, with his return looming, Onana appears determined to prove he still has a future at Manchester United. Whether he can successfully re-establish himself as the club’s first-choice goalkeeper will depend on his form, resilience and ability to win back the trust of both the coaching staff and supporters.
