Cairo Stadium congestion raises fears of match postponements in Egypt
The start of the 2026-27 Egyptian Premier League could be disrupted by uncertainty over the availability of Cairo International Stadium, with concerns growing over the number of clubs scheduled to use the venue.
Media personality Ahmed Shobeir has warned that the heavy fixture schedule could place significant pressure on the stadium and potentially lead to matches being moved or postponed at the beginning of the season.
The Egyptian Premier League is due to begin on 21 August, but the stadium’s readiness remains a concern ahead of the new campaign.
More clubs set to use Cairo Stadium
Shobeir said on his radio programme on ON Sport FM that the original plan was for Al Ahly, Zamalek and Zed to host their matches at Cairo Stadium.
However, National Bank and Modern Sport have since been added to the list, increasing the number of fixtures expected to be played at the venue.
The increased usage has raised concerns over the condition of the playing surface, particularly with several clubs expected to use the stadium throughout the season.
Stadium company asks for more time
According to Shobeir, the company responsible for preparing Cairo Stadium has requested that the opening round of league matches not be played there.
The request would give the venue additional time to prepare before it begins hosting clubs in early September.
There is also the approaching Egypt national team camp to consider, with the technical staff expected to require access to the main stadium for training.
Financial disputes add to uncertainty
The situation is further complicated by outstanding financial dues owed by some clubs.
Shobeir warned that if the current arrangements remain unchanged, authorities could be forced into unexpected decisions, including relocating or postponing matches at the start of the competition.
He called on the Ministry of Youth and Sports to intervene and establish clearer regulations governing the use of Cairo Stadium.
Shobeir proposes three-club limit
Shobeir suggested limiting the number of clubs using the stadium to three, while requiring those teams to pay part of their outstanding fees in advance.
He believes such measures would reduce pressure on the stadium and help prevent disruption once the league begins.
With the Egyptian Premier League scheduled to kick off on 21 August, attention will now turn to the relevant authorities for a decision on Cairo Stadium’s readiness and alternative venues for clubs affected by the uncertainty.
