Former CAF General Secretary Véron Mosengo-Omba sweeps DR Congo FA presidency in landslide victory
Véron Mosengo-Omba has officially been elected as the new president of Federation Congolaise de Football Association (FECOFA), securing a commanding victory during the federation’s General Assembly held in Kinshasa on Wednesday.
The former CAF Secretary General, who stood as the sole candidate in the election, received an overwhelming 60 votes out of 65 ballots cast, underlining the strong backing he enjoys within Congolese football circles.
Only three delegates voted against his candidacy, while two ballots were declared invalid.
Mosengo will now take charge of FECOFA for the next four years, ushering in what many hope will be a new era of reform, professionalism, and stability for football in the Democratic Republic of the Congo.
The election result reflected near-unanimous support for Mosengo’s leadership credentials and administrative experience. Having previously served in one of African football’s most influential executive positions at Confederation of African Football (CAF), he enters office with significant continental experience and a broad network across international football.
Delegates at the assembly viewed his candidacy as an opportunity to restore credibility and strengthen the structure of Congolese football at both domestic and international levels.
The scale of the victory also demonstrated confidence in his vision for FECOFA at a time when the federation is seeking greater stability and long-term development.
Mosengo built his reputation through football administration rather than coaching or playing, becoming one of the most recognised executives in African football governance during his time as CAF Secretary General.
His experience working alongside continental football authorities is expected to play a key role in improving FECOFA’s institutional organisation, financial management, and international relationships.
Observers believe his election could help strengthen the Democratic Republic of Congo’s influence within African football politics while also opening opportunities for improved football development programmes.
Mosengo now inherits a federation carrying significant expectations from supporters, clubs, and stakeholders eager to see Congolese football return to greater prominence.
The Democratic Republic of Congo remains one of Africa’s most talent-rich football nations, but inconsistency in administration and long-term planning has often limited the full potential of the country’s football ecosystem.
While the election result gives Mosengo a strong mandate, expectations will also be high from the football community, especially regarding the performances of the national teams and the overall organisation of the domestic game.
Fans will hope his international experience can translate into meaningful reforms capable of modernising FECOFA and improving the competitiveness of Congolese football across all levels.
With a decisive electoral victory now secured, Véron Mosengo officially begins a four-year mandate that many believe could shape the future direction of football in the Democratic Republic of Congo.
His appointment marks not only a leadership change but also a significant moment for FECOFA as it looks to rebuild momentum, strengthen its institutions, and restore the nation’s football standing on the African stage.
