Barcelona’s Clasico loss exposes Hansi Flick’s record against top coaches

Barcelona’s 2-1 defeat by Real Madrid in Sunday’s first La Liga Clasico of the season has renewed scrutiny of Hansi Flick’s results against leading managers.

Flick has delivered significant success since taking charge of the Catalan club in the summer of 2024, but his time at Barcelona has also been marked by repeated difficulties against elite coaches, with victories in such fixtures proving the exception rather than the rule.

During his first season, Barcelona lost 2-1 to Atletico de Madrid, managed by Diego Simeone, before recovering to win the return fixture 4-2.

Flick’s strongest record against a major rival came against Carlo Ancelotti, who was in charge of Real Madrid at the time. Barcelona defeated Ancelotti’s side in both league meetings.

However, their Champions League campaign ended in the semi-finals, where they were eliminated by Inter Milan, then managed by Simone Inzaghi.

The challenges continued in the following 2025/2026 season. Barcelona were beaten 2-1 by Paris Saint-Germain, led by Luis Enrique, and suffered the same scoreline against Real Madrid under Xabi Alonso in the Clasico.

Flick’s side also lost 3-0 to Chelsea, managed by Enzo Maresca, in the Champions League. Their European campaign ultimately ended against Atletico de Madrid and Simeone.

Simeone also inflicted further damage in the Copa del Rey semi-finals. Atletico won the first leg 4-0, and although Barcelona claimed a 3-0 victory in the return match, they were still eliminated from the competition.

This season has brought another setback against a leading coach, with Barcelona losing 4-2 to Paris Saint-Germain in the Champions League. Sunday’s defeat by Real Madrid has added to a sequence of results that has increasingly highlighted Flick’s problems in these high-profile contests.

The pattern has raised concerns over Barcelona’s ambitions, particularly in Europe. The club are seeking to win the Champions League for the first time since 2015, but their record against strong opponents and experienced managers has placed that objective under pressure.

Barcelona’s continental hopes could face a serious threat if the difficulties continue. Reaching the final stages of the Champions League requires the club to overcome several of Europe’s leading teams, making results against elite opposition central to their prospects of returning to the trophy.
