Barcelona’s prolific attack will meet Atletico Madrid’s formidable defence on Sunday, when the two sides contest a La Liga summit clash at the Riyadh Air Metropolitano that could reshape the title picture.
The visitors have scored 46 goals in 11 league matches this season, an average of 4.18 per game and 24 more than Atletico Madrid. Diego Simeone’s side, however, have conceded only eight goals in the same number of fixtures, setting up a contest between the division’s most potent attack and its strongest defence.
Barcelona’s threat has come from across the squad rather than one individual, with 13 different players scoring in La Liga, according to Mundo Deportivo. The variety of Hans-Dieter Flick’s attacking options will be central to the challenge facing Atletico.
Raphinha leads Barcelona’s scoring charts with 15 goals, followed by Lamine Yamal with 10 and Fermin Lopez with five. Gabriel Jesus has scored three, while Gordon and Adeyemi have each contributed two.
Olmo, Eric, Cancelo, Kounde, Pedri, Rodri and Xavi Espart have also scored once apiece. Barcelona’s defensive record is less impressive by comparison, with 12 goals conceded – four more than Atletico Madrid – potentially offering Simeone a route to expose weaknesses.
Simeone’s defensive test
Atletico Madrid have kept six clean sheets in their 11 league games, underlining the defensive organisation that has become a defining feature of Simeone’s team.
Athletic Club were the only side to score three times against Atletico in a single match, which remains the highest number of goals the Madrid club have allowed in one game this season.
Simeone’s side will nevertheless arrive at the match after a 0-2 defeat by Bayern Munich in the fourth round of the Champions League. That result may have raised questions around Atletico’s confidence, but it also gives them an opportunity to respond against Barcelona and demonstrate that their defensive strength remains intact against the best attack in Spain.
The encounter, scheduled for 08 November 2026, is therefore more than a battle for three points. It is also a meeting of contrasting approaches: Barcelona’s emphasis on relentless attacking and Atletico’s reliance on structure and defensive resilience.
Expected line-ups
Simeone is preparing a defensive line of Marcos Llorente, Marc Pubill, David Hancko and Alejandro Grimaldo, with Jan Oblak expected to start in goal as Atletico attempt to contain Barcelona’s scoring threat.
Flick is expected to deploy Lamine Yamal, Anthony Gordon and Raphinha as his attacking trio. Fermin Lopez is set to operate just behind them, linking Barcelona’s midfield with its forward line.
The outcome could depend on whether Barcelona’s multiple attacking routes can break through Atletico’s compact defensive system, or whether Simeone’s side can recover from their Champions League defeat by frustrating the league’s leading scorers.
