Barcelona completed their move for Karim Adeyemi a year earlier than planned after Borussia Dortmund warned the Germany international he could be left out of the team if he refused to extend his contract.
The Spanish newspaper Sport reports that Barcelona had monitored the winger’s progress for a considerable period, with manager Hansi Flick playing a leading role in the decision to secure his signing.
Flick knows Adeyemi’s qualities from their time working within the Germany national-team set-up across different age groups. That experience gave him a detailed understanding of the player’s ability and potential.
Barcelona had initially considered waiting until Adeyemi’s contract with Borussia Dortmund expired in the summer of 2027. Such a move would have provided a significant financial advantage, but the situation changed as the German club prepared for the following season.
Dortmund were aware of Adeyemi’s plans and made it clear that rejecting a new contract could leave him facing a season on the sidelines, or with only very limited involvement. The club warned that such a situation could damage both his career and his future development.
The departure of Ferran Torres to Paris Saint-Germain also created an opening in Barcelona’s attack. Barcelona recognised that the circumstances offered an opportunity to act sooner and opened negotiations with Borussia Dortmund.
With only one year remaining on Adeyemi’s contract, the transfer became financially achievable. The agreement was completed with all parties satisfied, allowing Adeyemi to join Barcelona 12 months earlier than originally intended.
Adeyemi responds with strong start
Barcelona’s decision has begun to produce results during the opening months of the campaign. Adeyemi has made the most of the minutes given to him by Flick and has rediscovered the energy and speed that were missing from his previous season at Borussia Dortmund.
He has become an effective option from the bench, using his pace and direct running to change matches when replacing Gordon, whose approach is more measured and tactically disciplined.
Adeyemi also gives Barcelona a different attacking profile when selected from the start, particularly on the left. His movement adds unpredictability and a degree of spontaneity to the team’s play.
His early statistics underline the impact he has made. Before Barcelona’s meeting with Deportivo Alaves, Adeyemi had played 452 minutes across 13 appearances, scoring four goals.
Two of those goals have come in La Liga and two in the UEFA Champions League. He has also supplied three assists, all of them in domestic competition.
The accompanying schedule lists Barcelona against Deportivo Alaves in the Copa del Rey on 03 November 2026. It also lists an Aston Villa fixture in the UEFA Champions League on 03 November 2026.
