Manchester United supporters directed a series of angry and abusive chants at the club’s leadership after their 2-0 defeat by Chelsea at Stamford Bridge, with co-owner Jim Ratcliffe among the main targets of their frustration.
Large numbers of away fans travelled to west London expecting another disappointing result and prepared to make their feelings known about the people running the club. Their anger reflected both Manchester United’s poor form and continuing unrest behind the scenes.
The latest protests came only six days after supporters in the Stratford End intensified their demonstrations at Old Trafford following the defeat by Bournemouth. The Chelsea match was played in another tense atmosphere, with senior figures repeatedly criticised from the stands.
Ratcliffe was singled out in chants that drew a direct comparison between him and the Glazer family, suggesting supporters did not believe the change in ownership had delivered the transformation they had hoped for.
According to The Sun, fans sang: “Jim Ratcliffe, son of a…, Jim Ratcliffe, son of a…, just like the Glazers, Ratcliffe, son of a…”
Other senior officials were also subjected to abuse. Football director Jason Wilcox was heavily criticised, while chief executive Omar Berrada was among the most prominent figures targeted by supporters.
The frustration intensified after Manchester United squandered several chances before half-time. Wilcox and Berrada were later seen in an uncomfortable appearance on the team bus, while manager Michael Carrick was visibly dejected after the final whistle.
Carrick under pressure
Carrick is expected to remain in charge for at least two more matches before the international break. However, his position is increasingly uncertain, with the possibility that Manchester United could dismiss a third manager within two and a half years.
The Sun described the period as a “reign of terror”, as pressure continues to build on those responsible for the club’s sporting and executive decisions.
Ratcliffe has not received noticeably different treatment from the Glazers, either inside or outside Old Trafford. Supporters have made clear that the prospect of a new, modern stadium would mean little to them if the team ultimately ended up being relegated.
Wilcox has also faced criticism since comments made by Lisandro Martinez after Manchester United’s defeat by Atletico Madrid in the UEFA Champions League. The Argentina defender used that occasion to express criticism of the club’s leadership.
The report concluded that Manchester United’s supporters had become “the only positive thing left inside the club”. With fewer opportunities for the decision-makers to avoid scrutiny, changes at board level are increasingly being viewed as unavoidable.
