Augsburg’s 8.4-second plan that stunned Bayern Munich

Augsburg’s fastest-ever Bundesliga goal against Bayern Munich was the result of a carefully prepared tactic rather than a fortunate mistake, according to goalscorer Robin Fellhauer.

Fellhauer struck after only 8.4 seconds as Augsburg secured a 2-2 draw, exploiting Bayern’s familiar approach at kick-off. The Bavarian side regularly play the ball back to goalkeeper Manuel Neuer, who then attempts to send it forward.

Augsburg had identified that pattern before the match. Fellhauer, who joined the club from Elversberg in summer 2025 for €700,000, was instructed to bypass Alphonso Davies and put Neuer under immediate pressure.

“We discussed Bayern’s tactic clearly before the match,” Fellhauer told German newspaper Bild. “My task was to get past Alphonso Davies and press Neuer so that he could not control the ball.”

The plan produced an unexpected reward almost immediately. Harry Kane passed back to Neuer from the opening kick-off, but the goalkeeper misjudged the ball’s bounce. Fellhauer reacted first, closed him down from the nearest possible position and finished into an unguarded net.

“I got past Davies relatively easily. Then I noticed that the ball bounced unexpectedly in front of Neuer, so I rushed towards him and pressed him as closely as possible,” Fellhauer added.

Neuer acknowledged that Bayern have relied on the routine for a long time.

“It is the traditional strategy, and we have followed it for a long time,” he told Bild.

The error may now lead Bayern’s coaching staff to reconsider whether the approach remains worthwhile in future matches.

Fellhauer’s goal also established a new Bundesliga record for the fastest goal. He moved ahead of Karim Bellarabi and Kevin Volland, who had both scored after nine seconds, according to the competition’s recorded statistics. The Augsburg player received congratulations from both forwards after his achievement.

The result was not the first time Augsburg had caught Bayern by surprise. During the 2018-19 season, Augsburg took the lead after 12 seconds when Bayern’s Leon Goretzka accidentally scored an own goal.

This time, Augsburg’s threat extended beyond the early breakthrough. The hosts withstood Bayern’s attacks through a disciplined defensive display and looked to counter-attack quickly, preserving their chance of taking a positive result until the final whistle.

Manager Manuel Baum praised the contribution of the entire squad, including those who came off the bench.

“It was a superb team performance, regardless of who started the match or who came on as a substitute,” Baum said. “That is why it would not be appropriate to single out any player today. I am very proud of the players and everyone who was present in the stadium.”

Although Augsburg’s preparation disrupted Bayern, the visitors also contributed to both goals they conceded by making mistakes that allowed their opponents back into the match.
