Asamoah Gyan’s unmatched World Cup legacy
Asamoah Gyan, Ghana’s legendary striker, remains the most decorated African player in World Cup history.
He was the first Ghanaian to score at a World Cup, netting against the Czech Republic in 2006 just 68 seconds into the match, the fastest goal Ghana has ever scored in the tournament.
Gyan holds the record for most World Cup goals by any African player, with six. He scored in every World Cup he participated in (2006, 2010, 2014) and made 11 appearances for Ghana, the most by any Ghanaian player. His consistency and speed set him apart from peers across continents.
Today, the former skipper is helping motivate the players by drawing on his experience from the World Cup. Ghana is currently preparing for the 2026 World Cup. Ghana played a 1-1 draw with Wales before heading to the US for the World Cup campaign. According to reports, Ghana will play a closed-door friendly to end their preparations.
Ghana will play their opening Group L match against Panama on June 17 in Toronto, before facing England in Boston on June 23 and Croatia in Philadelphia on June 27. Gyan’s legacy continues to inspire the new generation as Ghana aims for success in North America.
