AS Roma boss Gian Gasperini backs Moroccan midfielder El Aynaoui to bounce back after AFCON heartbreak
AS Roma head coach Gian Piero Gasperini has admitted that the Africa Cup of Nations can sometimes affect players when they return to club duties, but stressed that he has no long-term concerns about Moroccan midfielder Neil El Aynaoui.
Speaking before Roma’s league encounter with Como, Gasperini addressed questions surrounding El Aynaoui’s recent dip in form following his involvement with Morocco at the Africa Cup of Nations.
The Italian manager explained that such situations are not unusual, noting that players who return from AFCON often require time to readjust to the pace and demands of club football.
According to Gasperini, the challenge becomes even more noticeable when the tournament takes place in the middle of a busy domestic campaign, particularly during the December and January period when clubs are competing in multiple competitions.
“The Africa Cup of Nations often creates these kinds of difficulties, but players recover by playing and training,” he said.
Gasperini also pointed out that clubs must take these realities into account when recruiting players who are likely to participate in the continental tournament during the club season.
Despite the discussion around El Aynaoui’s performances, the Roma coach made it clear that he is not concerned about the midfielder’s situation. Instead, he urged patience while expressing confidence in the player’s ability to regain his best form.
“El Aynaoui is an excellent player with great dedication, so we have to be patient,” Gasperini said. “He will certainly return to a better level.”
The Moroccan international, 24, arrived at AS Roma in July 2025 after establishing himself in France with spells at AS Nancy Lorraine and RC Lens. His consistent performances in Ligue 1 earned him a five-year contract with the Italian club.
By the time he completed his move to Rome, El Aynaoui had already accumulated more than 100 senior appearances, building a reputation as a composed and reliable presence in midfield.
