Arsene Wenger considering challenge to Gianni Infantino in FIFA presidential election
Arsene Wenger is being urged to stand against Gianni Infantino in the next FIFA presidential election, with the former Arsenal manager expected to decide his position by the middle of next week.
The election is due to take place in Rabat, Morocco, on 18 March, and Wenger has emerged as a possible rival to Infantino, who is seeking another term as FIFA president despite recent controversy surrounding his leadership.
According to Foot Mercato, citing French newspaper L’Equipe, a series of meetings is taking place in an effort to persuade the 77-year-old Frenchman to enter the contest. Wenger has not yet made a final decision, but reports suggest he is now closer than ever to seriously considering a candidacy after a lengthy period of uncertainty.
His position could become clearer after the meetings, with an announcement possible by the middle of next week.
Wenger seen as a strong alternative
Those seeking to challenge Infantino regard Wenger as a significant potential candidate because of his worldwide profile and extensive experience in football.
The former Arsenal manager also has long-standing relationships across Africa and Asia, which could help him attract support from national associations in those regions. His lack of ties to UEFA may also make him an acceptable option for several national football federations.
Reports indicate that some figures within FIFA are supporting the possibility of Wenger standing and are working to convince him to take part in the election.
However, Wenger’s age would place a clear limit on his time in office if he were to win. At 77, he would be eligible to serve only one four-year term, according to the reports.
Tashima also enters possible contest
Infantino’s potential opposition may not be limited to Wenger.
Kozo Tashima, the honorary president of the Japan Football Association, has also announced his intention to run for the FIFA presidency. His decision increases the prospect of an election featuring several candidates against the incumbent.
Infantino is seeking a new term while facing scrutiny and criticism in recent weeks. The possible involvement of Wenger, a figure with a high international profile, and Tashima would create a more competitive contest ahead of the vote in the Moroccan capital.
Wenger’s final decision remains pending, with his expected announcement likely to determine whether the election develops into a direct challenge to Infantino or a wider multi-candidate race.
