Julian Alvarez the key threat as Barcelona visit Atletico Madrid in La Liga summit clash
Julian Alvarez will be the main focus when Atletico Madrid host Barcelona at the Riyadh Air Metropolitano on 8 November 2026, with victory potentially sending Diego Simeone’s side into the international break at the top of La Liga and underlining their title ambitions.
According to Spanish newspaper AS, Alvarez is central to the pre-match discussion because of the summer’s uncertainty over his future and his reported desire to join Barcelona. Yet away from those transfer issues, the Argentina forward has become one of Atletico’s most reliable performers against the Catalan club.
Alvarez has scored four goals in nine appearances against Barcelona during his two seasons with Atletico. No other side has conceded more goals to him, apart from Real Madrid and Rayo Vallecano, against whom he has also scored four times.
His record against Barcelona is stronger because he has also supplied two assists against them. He has one assist against Real Madrid and none against Rayo Vallecano.
The 26-year-old has scored against Barcelona in La Liga, the Copa del Rey and the UEFA Champions League, finding the net both at the Metropolitano and at the Catalan club’s home ground. Those numbers explain why Simeone will be looking to him to trouble Hansi Flick’s team once again.
Alvarez’s record against Barcelona
Alvarez’s first two goals against Barcelona came during his debut season at Atletico, in 2024-2025.
On 25 February 2025, he opened the scoring in a remarkable 4-4 Copa del Rey semi-final first leg at the Metropolitano. Alvarez played the entire match, but Barcelona won the return fixture at the same stadium to reach the final, dealing Atletico a significant blow. The Argentine again completed the match.
Less than a month later, on 16 March, Barcelona came from behind to win 4-2 in a La Liga match at the Metropolitano. Alvarez scored Atletico’s opener as the hosts moved 2-0 ahead before Barcelona recovered and turned the game around.
Alvarez was substituted in the 60th minute for Alexander Sørloth, who scored Atletico’s second goal 10 minutes after coming on.
Last season brought greater success for Simeone’s side in the cup competitions. On 12 February, Atletico produced a memorable 4-0 victory over Barcelona in the Copa del Rey at the Riyadh Air Metropolitano. Alvarez scored the fourth goal and played for 68 minutes before being replaced by Alexander Sørloth.
Atletico appeared to have one foot in the semi-final, but Barcelona won the second leg 3-0. Alvarez started and was substituted in the 69th minute, with Alex Baena replacing him.
Around two months later, on 8 April, Alvarez scored a direct free-kick in the first leg of the Champions League quarter-final at Camp Nou. His goal put Atletico 1-0 ahead, and he celebrated enthusiastically after giving his side the lead.
Alvarez played the full match, which Atletico won after Sørloth scored a second goal to eliminate Flick’s team. Barcelona won the second leg 2-1, but Atletico progressed, with Alvarez again completing the match.
Atletico therefore knocked Barcelona out of both the Copa del Rey and the Champions League, despite losing both of their La Liga meetings. Alvarez did not play in the league match at the Riyadh Air Metropolitano.
Simeone rested him for that fixture because Atletico were preparing to face Barcelona in the Champions League four days later.
A summer dominated by transfer talk
Those results came before the World Cup and the subsequent comments from Alvarez in which he expressed a desire to leave Atletico. The issue developed into a prolonged summer saga after Atletico lodged a complaint against Barcelona, while the Madrid club maintained its position and insisted on protecting its interests.
Despite the uncertainty, Alvarez remains under contract with Atletico until 2030. His market value is €110m, and he is regarded as the team’s most influential and decisive player. His performances as the season has progressed suggest he is beginning to recover his best form.
He scored his first La Liga goal of the current campaign on matchday 10 against Deportivo, turning a fine pass from Grimaldo into the winning goal. Four days earlier, he had scored against Stuttgart in the Champions League in a match that finished 1-1.
Alvarez has played 11 matches this season, including seven in La Liga and four in the Champions League. He has scored twice and provided two assists.
Numbers from his Atletico career
In his first season with Atletico, Alvarez made 57 appearances: 37 in La Liga, 10 in the Champions League, seven in the Copa del Rey and three in the Club World Cup.
He scored 29 goals, including 17 in La Liga, seven in the Champions League and five in the Copa del Rey. He also registered eight assists, with four in La Liga, one in the Champions League, two in the Copa del Rey and one in the Club World Cup.
His output fell last season, particularly in La Liga, although he remained effective in the Champions League and helped Atletico reach the semi-finals.
He played 49 matches in total: 29 in La Liga, 15 in the Champions League, four in the Copa del Rey and one in the Spanish Super Cup. Alvarez scored 20 goals, comprising eight in La Liga, 10 in the Champions League and two in the Copa del Rey. He also created nine goals, with four assists in La Liga, four in the Champions League and one in the Copa del Rey.
Barcelona’s visit to the Metropolitano is therefore one of the most anticipated matches of the campaign. Alvarez will hope to add to his record against the club that wanted to sign him last summer, while Atletico seek a result that could carry them into the international break as league leaders.
