Arsenal striker Viktor Gyokeres sets new Nations League scoring record

Viktor Gyokeres became the first player to score in six consecutive UEFA Nations League appearances, but his record-breaking goal could not earn Sweden victory against Bosnia and Herzegovina.

The Arsenal striker put Sweden ahead in the 61st minute after having an earlier effort ruled out for handball. Kerim Alajbegovic equalised with 19 minutes remaining to secure a 1-1 draw.

Sweden remain top of League B Group 4, two points clear of Bosnia and Herzegovina, but Gyokeres was frustrated that his side failed to claim all three points after controlling much of the match.

“It’s sour,” Gyokeres said after the final whistle.

“I felt it, but it’s tough when there was nothing that helped a lot – whether the ball touched my hand a little or not. Of course it’s tough, that would have been a nice goal.”

The 28-year-old was also disappointed that Sweden could not protect their lead and keep a clean sheet.

“Of course, it’s hard for us not to win the game and keep a clean sheet,” he said. “Playing out the game simply. But in terms of play, I think we are doing very well today and we should be happy with that. But it’s heavy and we should have won.”

Gyokeres has moved beyond the previous Nations League scoring record of five straight matches, set by Slovenia’s Benjamin Sesko and Serbia’s Aleksandar Mitrovic.

“It’s a good record and I can continue to beat it,” he said.

His latest goal took his Sweden tally to 24, leaving him three short of the country’s all-time top 10.

The match was also Edin Dzeko’s final appearance for Bosnia and Herzegovina. The former Manchester City striker finished his international career with 152 caps and 73 goals at the age of 40.

Sweden will travel to face Romania on Monday, with the opportunity to strengthen their position at the top of the group.

Elsewhere, Arsenal defender Riccardo Calafiori played the full 90 minutes as Italy drew 1-1 with France in Paris.

Michael Olise gave France the lead shortly after half-time with an excellent finish, but Italy levelled 13 minutes later through Alessandro Bastoni. The result leaves Italy third in League A Group 1, ahead of their home match against Turkiye on Monday, October 5.

Northern Ireland moved to the top of League B Group 2 with a 3-0 win over Ukraine in Slovakia.

Ciaron Brown scored twice and Isaac Price added a header as Northern Ireland preserved their unbeaten start to the group. Arsenal forward Ceadach O’Neill came off the bench in the 84th minute to win his fourth international cap and help secure the victory.

Northern Ireland are now pushing for promotion to League A for the first time.
