Angola forward Chico Banza opens up on debut Zamalek season

Angolan forward Chico Banza has reflected on his debut Zamalek campaign, describing it as challenging but memorable season.

Speaking on MBC Egypt, the attacker reflected on the emotional highs and lows of the season while reaffirming his commitment to improving and helping Zamalek compete for major honours.

Banza admitted that the campaign had not been easy, but stressed that it also contained several positive moments that strengthened his connection with the club and its passionate fanbase.

“The season was very difficult, but at the same time it brought many happy moments,” he said. “Zamalek fans always support the team in all circumstances.”

The Angolan international also addressed expectations surrounding his performances, acknowledging that he constantly pushes himself to meet the standards demanded by supporters of one of Africa’s biggest clubs.

“I promise the fans that I am constantly working on developing myself, and I always hope to live up to their expectations,” he stated.

One of the most emotional moments of the interview came when Banza discussed his reaction to being substituted during matches. The winger explained that his frustration stems purely from his desire to contribute more on the pitch and help the team achieve success.

“I feel sad when I’m substituted because I always want to play and make a difference on the field,” he explained. “Sometimes I feel upset when I see that I haven’t made the contribution that pleases the fans.”

Despite speculation that such reactions could point to tension with the coaching staff, Banza was quick to dismiss any suggestion of conflict with the technical team. He emphasized that his relationship with the head coach remains strong and built on mutual understanding.

“The matter is not related to any crisis with the coach,” he clarified. “Our relationship is very good, and he understands my ambition and my continuous desire to participate.”

Banza also expressed strong belief in Zamalek’s ability to challenge for major trophies, insisting that from the moment he arrived at the club, he understood the expectations attached to wearing the white shirt.

“I have been convinced since day one that Zamalek is capable of winning all championships,” he said. “It is a big and prestigious club, and its history is always linked to competing for titles. That is our goal.”

Looking back on the season, the player identified the clash against ZED FC as the toughest encounter the team faced, describing it as an extremely demanding match that tested the squad physically and mentally.

Off the pitch, Banza revealed that he has built strong relationships within the dressing room, highlighting several teammates with whom he shares a close bond.

“My relationship with Nasser Mansi is very strong, as is my relationship with all the Zamalek players,” he said. “I really like Omar Gaber and Hossam Abdel-Maguid.”

The attacker also spoke about the intense title race involving rivals Al Ahly SC and Pyramids FC, acknowledging the quality and competitiveness of both clubs.

“The competition is very difficult because the two teams are big and have strong players,” he explained. “The struggle for championships is always fierce.”

When discussing rival players he enjoys watching, Banza named several high-profile Egyptian stars, including Emam Ashour, Ahmed Sayed Zizo, and Mahmoud Hassan Trezeguet.

He also commented on the controversial possibility of Zizo moving to Al Ahly, admitting that keeping the winger at Zamalek would have greatly benefited the team.

“If Zizo had stayed at Zamalek, he would have been a great addition,” Banza noted.

However, when asked whether he could ever consider playing for Al Ahly himself, the Angolan made his position very clear.

“As far as I’m concerned, I only think about Zamalek,” he concluded. “I will continue to play for them as long as I am here.”

His comments are likely to resonate strongly with Zamalek supporters, particularly at a time when questions continue to surround the club’s future direction, squad stability, and ambitions in domestic and continental competitions.
