Andorra returned to training on Wednesday for the first time since the death of Tenerife forward Jesus de Miguel, with goalkeeper Jesus Owono absent after being involved in the incident.
The session began with a minute’s silence in memory of De Miguel. Andorra’s players, coaching staff, club president Ferran Vilaseca and other employees took part as the club continued to deal with the shock surrounding the tragedy.
Training was optional, meaning several players did not attend. Owono, the Equatorial Guinea international goalkeeper, was among those missing. He collided with De Miguel in the closing stages of the match between Tenerife and Andorra at the Estadio Heliodoro Rodriguez Lopez.
According to the Spanish news agency, Owono has been deeply affected by what happened. No further details about his condition have been released.
The match was suspended on Monday after De Miguel suffered a medical emergency. He was taken by ambulance to the Hospital Universitario Nuestra Senora de Candelaria, where he died at 08:00 on Tuesday.
The Spanish police have opened an investigation into the player’s death. However, it is difficult to bring a charge of involuntary homicide against Owono because the incident happened during a sporting event.
The Spanish league has postponed Andorra’s next scheduled fixture, against Real Mallorca on Sunday, as a mark of respect following the death of the Tenerife forward. The game was due to take place in the 13th round of the Spanish second division.
Andorra’s next match is now scheduled to be against Almeria on 14 November in the 14th round of the competition.
