Algerian football mourns Rachid Makhloufi: Minute of silence to be observed across league matches
The Algerian Professional Football Federation has announced that all matches in the eighth round of the national league will begin with a minute of silence on Saturday, in memory of the legendary Algerian footballer Rachid Makhloufi, who passed away on Friday.
In an official statement on Friday, the Federation expressed its condolences and announced the tribute, which will be observed across all stadiums before kick-off in honor of Makhloufi.
Known for his contribution to Algerian football and his distinguished career, Makhloufi was a prominent player for the FLN (Front de Libération Nationale) team, a former national team coach, and a former president of the Algerian Football Federation.
French club Saint-Étienne, where Makhloufi spent a significant part of his career, also paid heartfelt homage to the player, celebrating his legacy and impact on the club.
The club shared a poignant tribute, describing him as “a rare talent, a committed citizen, and a legendary figure.”
Accompanying a photo of Makhloufi in one of his title-winning moments, the club wrote, “The tears of Saint-Étienne flow… a great man and an extraordinary footballer has left us.
Rachid Makhloufi is gone, but his legacy will remain with us forever.”
Makhloufi’s career at Saint-Étienne is remembered for his significant achievements, including four Ligue 1 titles (1957, 1964, 1967, and 1968) and the French Cup in 1968.
He also won the Charles Drago Cup with the club in 1957 and the French Champions Cup in 1967.
His contributions left an indelible mark on Saint-Étienne, where he is considered an eternal legend.
As Algerian football unites to honor his memory, Rachid Makhloufi’s legacy as both a player and a symbol of Algerian pride endures.
The tribute at this weekend’s matches reflects his lasting influence on the sport and his role as an inspiring figure in Algerian football history.
