Algeria lose midfielder Mohamed Benkhemassa to injury ahead of CHAN opener
Algeria have been dealt a blow just three days before their opening fixture at the 2025 African Nations Championship (CHAN), as veteran midfielder Mohamed Benkhemassa has been ruled out through injury.
His place in the squad will be taken by winger Tayeb Meziani.
The news was confirmed on Thursday, August 1, by the Algerian Football Federation (FAF), following a round of medical examinations that revealed the extent of Benkhemassa’s injury.
At 32, the MC Alger midfielder had been aiming to make one final contribution on the international stage under coach Madjid Bougherra.
The setback is all the more frustrating given reports that he had been close to securing a move to Qatar ahead of the tournament.
“This is a disappointment for the former Malaga man,” read part of the official statement, as the FAF confirmed his withdrawal from the competition.
Replacing him is 28-year-old Tayeb Meziani, also of MC Alger.
Though the two players operate in vastly different roles, Bougherra appears to have opted for versatility and offensive depth over a like-for-like substitution.
Meziani is a pacey winger known for his direct play on the flanks and was part of Algeria’s victorious 2021 Arab Cup squad, also under Bougherra’s guidance.
Meziani’s familiarity with the national team setup and his relationship with the coach are expected to smooth his transition into the squad.
However, the decision has sparked some debate, as many expected another defensive midfielder to fill the void left by Benkhemassa.

The unexpected switch in profile could suggest a tactical shift for Algeria, who find themselves in a competitive CHAN group alongside Uganda, South Africa, Guinea, and Niger.
With the tournament set to begin on August 4, the inclusion of Meziani may hint at a more attacking approach as Algeria seek to go one better than their runner-up finish on home soil in the previous edition.
Benkhemassa’s absence remains a significant loss, particularly in terms of leadership and experience. His presence in midfield had been seen as key to balancing the squad’s youth with seasoned professionalism.
Now, with ambitions still high and expectations mounting, Algeria will look to adapt quickly as they chase their first CHAN title.
