Algeria head coach Vladimir Petković is facing a growing defensive dilemma just days before announcing his squad for the upcoming FIFA international window.
With key fixtures against Botswana and Mozambique in the 2026 World Cup qualifiers approaching, injuries to two key defenders have disrupted his plans.
Mohamed Amine Tougaï of Espérance de Tunis has already been ruled out due to injury, and now Youcef Atal appears to be at risk of missing out as well.
The Al-Wasl full-back was forced off the pitch in the 64th minute during his team’s AFC Champions League round of 16 clash against Al-Sadd, raising concerns about his fitness for the national team’s upcoming training camp.
Atal doubtful after injury setback
Atal’s availability for Al-Wasl’s second-leg encounter against Al-Sadd next Monday is already in doubt, casting further uncertainty over his potential inclusion in Petković’s squad.
The 27-year-old has long struggled with injuries, and his latest setback could see him sidelined once again for Algeria’s crucial qualifiers.
Al-Wasl head coach Félix Sánchez highlighted the physical intensity of the match, which saw two of his players forced off due to injury.
“As expected, it was a tight and intense match between the two teams. We conceded a difficult goal in the first half and could have managed the situation better. In the second half, we controlled the game and had more possession. Unfortunately, we lost two players to injury, and we will assess their recovery in the coming days,” Sánchez stated.
With Atal’s fitness now under scrutiny, medical tests will determine whether he can recover in time to join the national squad for their trip to Gaborone to face Botswana.
Farsi emerges as a reliable alternative
If Atal is ruled out, Columbus Crew defender Mohamed Farsi could step in as a potential replacement.
The 25-year-old has made an impressive start to the new Major League Soccer season, featuring in both of Columbus’ matches against Chicago and New England.
His strong performances have already earned him an assist and a place in the MLS Team of the Week.
Farsi has previously impressed for Algeria during the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers, delivering two assists in his first two international appearances against Liberia and Togo.
While he lacks Atal’s explosiveness and experience, his consistent form in club football could provide Petković with a dependable option at right-back.
With two more MLS matches ahead against Houston Dynamo and Los Angeles FC before the international break, Farsi will have further opportunities to strengthen his case for selection.
Meanwhile, Algeria awaits confirmation on Atal’s fitness, with hopes that the defensive setbacks do not derail their campaign for World Cup qualification.
