Algeria consider retired Keeper Oussama Benbot for 2026 World Cup amid goalkeeping crisis
Algeria is facing a growing goalkeeping crisis just weeks before the start of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, with head coach Vladimir Petkovic now reportedly considering a dramatic recall for retired international goalkeeper Oussama Benbot.
The 31-year-old USM Alger shot-stopper has suddenly re-emerged as a realistic option for the Desert Foxes following a string of injuries and fitness concerns affecting Algeria’s current goalkeeping department ahead of the World Cup.
Benbot has enjoyed an impressive campaign at club level, playing a decisive role in guiding USM Alger to the final of the CAF Confederation Cup, where the Algerian side will face Zamalek SC in the first leg this Saturday. His consistent performances, leadership, and experience have reportedly convinced the Algerian technical staff that he could provide stability at a critical moment.
The potential recall would mark a remarkable turnaround considering Benbot announced his retirement from international football after the last Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco. At the time, reports suggested frustration over limited playing opportunities and tensions with Petkovic contributed to his decision to step away from the national setup.
Algeria’s problems in goal intensified after a series of setbacks involving multiple keepers. Luca Zidane suffered a fractured jaw and chin while playing for Granada CF last month, ruling him out at a crucial stage of preparations.
Meanwhile, goalkeeper Malvin Mastil underwent surgery shortly after making his international debut for Algeria in March, further reducing available options for the coaching staff.
To compound matters, long-time first-choice goalkeeper Anthony Mandrea has also been sidelined due to a shoulder injury sustained while representing SM Caen. His situation has become even more complicated following Caen’s relegation to the French third division, a development reportedly viewed negatively by Petkovic as he evaluates the competitiveness and form levels of his squad members ahead of the tournament.
The Bosnian tactician had already attempted to broaden his options by handing a surprise call-up to 19-year-old goalkeeper Kylian Belazouk during the March friendlies against Uruguay and Guatemala. However, the Rennes youngster remains highly inexperienced and is yet to make an official senior appearance for the French club.
With uncertainty continuing to surround Algeria’s goalkeeping department, Benbot’s possible return is increasingly being viewed as a practical and experienced solution rather than an emergency gamble.
The situation has sparked growing concern among supporters as Algeria prepare for a difficult World Cup campaign in Group J alongside reigning world champions Argentina national football team, Austria, and Jordan.
For Petkovic, resolving the goalkeeper dilemma quickly has now become one of the most urgent priorities before the final squad list is confirmed. And in a twist few anticipated months ago, the coach may now have to rely on a player who once walked away from the national team to help rescue Algeria’s World Cup hopes.
