Alexis Guendouz focused on crucial World Cup qualifiers for Algeria
Algeria goalkeeper Alexis Guendouz is gearing up for two decisive 2026 World Cup qualifying matches, as the national team prepares to face Botswana and Mozambique.
With both fixtures carrying significant implications, the Persepolis shot-stopper has stressed the importance of securing maximum points.
Determined to deliver for Algeria
Guendouz, who has been a regular starter for Persepolis in both the domestic league and Asian Champions League, expressed his excitement about representing Algeria once again.
Thank God, everything is going well. I play regularly with my team, and since arriving at Persepolis, I’ve started every game,” he said.
His club’s recent return to the top of the league has been a boost, though he admitted the team was disappointed not to progress further in the Asian Champions League.
However, his focus now shifts to international duty, where Algeria’s World Cup aspirations are on the line.
High-stakes encounters await
Algeria will first travel to Francistown to take on Botswana on March 21, before returning home to face Mozambique at the Hocine Aït Ahmed Stadium in Tizi Ouzou on March 24.
Guendouz described both encounters as “finals” in the team’s journey to securing World Cup qualification.
“These two matches are crucial for us because the stakes are high: qualifying for the World Cup,” he stated. “We absolutely must win both matches, no matter the cost, to stay top of the group and continue moving towards our goal.”
With Algeria level on points with Mozambique and Botswana trailing by just three, Guendouz expects fierce competition.
Botswana and Mozambique will give their all to beat us. That’s why I say these games are like finals.
Playing during Ramadan no concern
With the first match falling during Ramadan, Guendouz dismissed any concerns about fasting affecting the squad’s performance.
Not at all. We’re professional players and used to this kind of situation.
This isn’t the first time we’ve played during the fast,” he explained. “Many of us have already played with our clubs during this period, and it won’t be a problem. We’re ready to face this situation, and Insha’Allah, we’ll come back with the three points from Botswana.”
Ready to step up
As anticipation builds for the crucial fixtures, Algerian fans have high expectations for Guendouz, with many seeing him as the preferred choice in goal.
When asked about the possibility of starting, he responded with confidence.
I am always ready to play, whatever role I am assigned, whether as a starter or a substitute.
What matters to me is contributing to the national team’s victory and making millions of Algerians happy.
If the coach decides to start me, I will give my best to deliver a great performance, keep a clean sheet, and return with three points from Francistown.
With Algeria’s qualification hopes hanging in the balance, all eyes will be on Guendouz and his teammates as they take on two pivotal fixtures in their World Cup journey.
