Al Hilal v Al-Ittihad: Simone Inzaghi faces defining test in Roshn Saudi League clash

Simone Inzaghi faces a major test of his Al Hilal project when his side meet Al-Ittihad in Saturday’s Roshn Saudi League Clasico.

The eighth-round fixture is more than a contest between two of Saudi Arabia’s biggest clubs. It brings together two teams moving in different directions and could significantly influence how supporters view Inzaghi and his work.

Al Hilal lead the table but have not consistently convinced their fans, while Al-Ittihad arrive with growing confidence under Yenz Vissinger. They have produced a strong opening to the season and established themselves as direct challengers for top spot.

Inzaghi joined Al Hilal with considerable expectations based on his previous experience, but he is already being asked to provide clear answers. Supporters want more than results: they expect a team with a recognisable identity, capable of matching the quality of its squad and imposing itself against direct rivals.

Vissinger’s unbeaten Al-Ittihad

Few of Al-Ittihad’s most optimistic supporters would have expected such a strong start under their new manager. Vissinger has guided “The Tigers” through seven matches without defeat, recording five wins and two draws.

That return has placed Al-Ittihad second on 17 points, just one behind Al Hilal. Their progress has also been underlined by victories over defending champions Al Nassr and Al Qadsiah, one of the leading contenders for the higher positions.

Those results have given Al-Ittihad belief and suggested their form is more than a brief early-season surge. Saturday’s match will provide a significant test of how they measure up against another of the league’s leading teams.

Al Hilal, by contrast, suffered a surprise defeat by Neom. The setback was damaging not only because of the points lost, but also because it revived questions about the team’s level and its ability to implement Inzaghi’s ideas.

When a side with Al Hilal’s resources struggles, attention naturally turns to the manager, particularly when some victories have also failed to produce a fully convincing performance.

More than three points for Inzaghi

Al Hilal’s position at the top of the table does not, on its own, shield Inzaghi from criticism. The club’s supporters demand control, chances and persuasive football, as well as victories.

The key issue is not whether Al Hilal have players capable of deciding the Clasico. Their squad offers quality and options in every area. The question is whether Inzaghi can turn that individual ability into a coherent team, rather than relying on a moment of brilliance to rescue difficult matches.

The game will also demand a careful balance between trying to dominate possession and protecting the spaces left when the ball is lost. An unbeaten and confident Al-Ittihad side will look to exploit any uncertainty and may not allow Al Hilal time to correct early mistakes.

A victory would give Inzaghi more than three points. It would halt a direct rival’s momentum, preserve Al Hilal’s lead and restore confidence in his project. A defeat would not automatically mean his tenure had failed, with the season still long and the decisive stages yet to come, but losing to an Al-Ittihad side in its best form would intensify the scrutiny.

A draw could prove acceptable depending on the circumstances, but it may not provide the clear response Inzaghi needs. For him, this “Clasico of death” is less about immediate survival than showing that Al Hilal are progressing in the right direction.
