Fouzi Lekjaa set to resign as CAF Finance Committee president

Morocco Football Federation president Fouzi Lekjaa is reportedly preparing to step down as chairman of the Confederation of African Football (CAF) Finance Committee as his growing government responsibilities demand more of his time.

According to French media outlet Jeune Afrique, Lekjaa is expected to relinquish the position he has held alongside his responsibilities in Moroccan football and government.

His recent appointment as Morocco’s Minister of Economy and Finance, responsible for Public Performance, is believed to be the main reason behind the anticipated decision.

The new ministerial role adds to an already demanding schedule for Lekjaa, who has served as president of the Royal Moroccan Football Federation (FRMF) since 2014.

He is also playing a key role in preparations for the 2030 FIFA World Cup, which Morocco will co-host with Spain and Portugal.

Although his expected resignation would mark a significant change in his involvement with CAF, it is not expected to signal a complete withdrawal from African football.

The development comes at a time of significant changes within the continental governing body.

On October 30, CAF confirmed its decision to retain the Africa Cup of Nations on a two-year cycle, reversing an earlier proposal to move the competition to a four-year format from 2028.

The organisation has also appointed Nigerian administrator Samson Adamu as its new Secretary General, while discussions continue over the possible introduction of an African Nations League.

Lekjaa’s anticipated departure from the Finance Committee would represent another notable adjustment within CAF’s leadership structure, with the Moroccan administrator expected to devote more attention to his ministerial duties and his country’s preparations for the 2030 World Cup.
