Cristiano Ronaldo should have retired after 2026 World Cup, says former Al Nassr boss Helder Cristovao

Former Al Nassr manager Helder Cristovao believes Cristiano Ronaldo chose the wrong time to end his international career and should have waited until immediately after the 2026 World Cup.

Ronaldo announced his retirement from international football on Thursday, bringing an end to a 23-year career with Portugal. During that time, he won the 2016 UEFA European Championship and the 2019 and 2025 UEFA Nations League titles.

Cristovao, speaking to Saudi newspaper Al Riyadiah, said the decision should have been made after the World Cup rather than earlier.

The former Al Nassr head coach also criticised the Portuguese Football Federation, saying it should have played a role in organising the timing of Ronaldo’s departure from international football.

“Ronaldo has given a great deal to his country and wore the captain’s armband for many years,” Cristovao said. “He left an exceptional mark through his performances and achievements, while his professional mentality was the main reason behind his excellence and his ability to remain at the top of world football.”

He added: “Ronaldo made everything different. I do not believe anyone will be able to come close to his level for many years. He possesses an exceptional mentality that made him different from the other stars of his generation.”

Cristovao said Ronaldo’s retirement would not prevent football from moving forward, pointing to the emergence of a new generation of players.

“Many great stars have retired before, and football continued,” he said. “There is a new generation coming.”

However, he stressed that Ronaldo’s individual career could not be replicated.

“But Cristiano Ronaldo cannot be repeated,” Cristovao said. “There is only one of him in history.”

Portugal are scheduled to face Denmark in UEFA Nations League – Pathway One on 14 November 2026.

Ronaldo’s Al Nassr are due to play Al Qadsiah in the Roshn Saudi League on 20 November 2026.
